Question Reflash of computer neccesary after tranny install??? Ripoff??

Having a donor auto installed at a local tranny shop. They quoted me labor to install the tranny I'm having shipped there is $600.00 plus fluid. They also let me know that it may be necessary to "REFLASH" the computer to get the truck to shift right after the install but they didn't know yet. They said they or the dealer may have to do it. I would think by now after thousands of jobs they would know whether or not this was going to be neccesary or not. Any info or are they looking to throw another fee on the bill for nothing??

Some of them indeed do need to be reflashed, but it depends on which vehicle you have. I haven't run into any problems where the trans needs to be flashed in all my years working here at Nix99, though.

$600 isn't bad.

You don't have to reflash your ECU. Just reset it by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery.

Shouldn't even need to do that, but you should have already disconnected your battery before changing the trans.

Those trucks won't require an ECU reflash, just install and go.

Thanks guys On a side note, I found a trans in Cleveland at a yard. Wrecked 01 with 107,000 on it. They want $900 for the tranny and transfer case. With the solid rep of these tranny's I think I may go with it. The other option is $1500 for a 36K mi. tranny shipped to me. I'm def on a budget so the 600 dollar price difference would pay for the labor. Any thoughts, and what would I be able to sell the t-case for. My t-case as far as far as I know is fine, so I could sell the one that comes with the donor to recoup some loss.
