While watching the exciting superbowl:rolleyes: today, I rebuilt and painted my hubs. Just wanted to post a pic. I saw this color on Eric Johnson's write-up and thought it looked nice. Now I just gotta sand down the writing on the dial and then put it on the runner.



The actual colors are a lot darker than the picture shows.

What I did after painting the dials was to use a small screw driver to scrape off the paint so the lettering would come through and look stock again.

After you do that, you can then shoot the whole hub with clear paint.

How easy are they to rebuild?

I used my knife and "cut" the paint off of the lettering. Worked great.

The rebuild is pretty easy. Just follow the write-up that little_joe did on the Outdoorwire forum, and you should be good to go. Just make sure that you don't lost the little ball and spring in the dial!!!

I never thought about spraying it with clear paint....hmmm, I just might do that.

Did you prime the parts first? I stripped the paint off completely and don't know if/what kind of primer I should use. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

I didn't prime it or anything. I just used that aircraft coating remover and then I rubbed them with steel wool to get as much paint off as I could. I don't think it's necessary to prime them. I put on 4 coats of paint on them and I think they came out very well. The blue and black is a lot darker than in the picture. I just finished sanding down the lettering and arrows with a sanding pad, washed it, retaped it, and finished squirting 4 coats of clear coat. It shines very nice.

I don't think you have to go to the trouble of priming unless you want to.

Personally, I prefer less work . I wasn't sure if they get alot of road rash and would need to be primed. (I don't want to be tearing them apart in 6 months to paint them again)

Have any pics of the final product? Mine will be similar, but the dials will match the body of my 4R since I have some paint that matches.
