rear diff breather plugged blew out inner axle seal

If my rear differential breather was plugged, would there be enough pressure to blow out my one of my inner axle seals? A machanic told me my right inner axle seal was blown because to much pressure built up in my differential. Sounds fishy.

Yup.... Thats the very reason we have axle breathers, so the extra pressure created by the heat of the differential doesn't blow out axle seals. The seals are pretty easy to change though. 4 bolts + brake lines + E-brake cable and a slight tug gets the axle out. Once the axle is out you will be staring right at the seal and its just a matter of prying the old one out and tapping the new one in.

Now that I have more time I will give all the details. May of 07 I had my truck inspected at Midas. The showed me there was oil leaking from the right axle. They replaced the inner and outer seal. Now 2000 miles later, May of 08 I had it inspected someplace else. Its leaking again! I dont drive it much and I dont wheel with it. I have synthetic in everything. My truck doesnt see hard use. My wife wont even drive it because she knows how much I love this truck.

Pull the rear diff breather out and see if it is clogged. Pretty easy to find out if you can blow air through it or not.

And have you check that leaking axle for straightness? Could be bent and that is causing it to leak. Or if may be that the seals were not installed properly, I had a pinion seal replaced once and it leaked within a few weeks. Shop replaced it for no charge.

The seals are known to leak even without a plugged breather. Im sure midas didnt use toyota seals. Toyota has an updated rear seal for those things and has more of a contact area

Thanks for the info. I can I bought it new, there is no way its bent. I just think they installed it wrong, plain and simple. I'm going to pull the breather tomorrow and check it.

Well I pulled of my breather this morning. It is fine. I blew through it and it is fine. I decided to do the extension while I was down there. $20.89 and about 30 minutes and its done. I saved the old breather so I can bring it up and show them.
