Question Rear compartment strap removal

Hi there,

I have 99 4Runner with the rear storage panel designed to hold the traffic triangles (or so I'm told). I've come across various threads about the various things people keep there. What I'd like to know is: has anyone tried removing the traffic triangle straps to make some additional room in there?

I have a small craftsman tool set in a black case that seems like it would fit right in there if it wasn't for the straps. I couldn't seem to figure out a way of getting them off though. It seems as if they're held on by plastic rivets. Would I have to drill those out, or is there a less destructive way of removing them?

Thanks and happy new year!

-Pawel

P.S. - Still waiting on the delivery of the haynes manual, but pretty sure that it won't provide much insight into this particular problem.

I'm guessing by the lack of replys that no one else, including me, have or know about the straps that you mentioned. Can you post a picture?

Also, welcome to the forum.

Wife's 4runner: It's my understanding that no American 4Runners come with the traffic triangle. I believe it is only a Europe thing where there might be some legal requirement to include them.

Gerdo: No problem, here are some photographs I took. Now that I look at it closely myself, it looks like they are in fact rivets and my only option is to drill them out if I want to get rid of the straps. :/

Just the same, if anyone has any better suggestions or clever uses for the compartment, I'd like to hear them. So far I'm just thinking that I want my ratchet set to fit in there.

I forgot about those straps. I have stuff shoved into that storage box. Mine have them. I think the onlt option is to drill out the rivets. Now I want too.

I carry a set of jumper cables in that compartment...along w/ bungee cords, a tow strap and other misc stuff. The jumper cable bag sits nice and snug between the two straps you speak of. Keeps the bag from moving around the compartment.
