once again my axle seals on my 99 4runner are leaking. i fixed the breathr tube that was clogged but i ahve an emergency and i need to travel 1800 miles. is there a possibility that i will loose the seal completly and all the fluid leak out or just taking a a risk of faulty brakes. will it continue to get worse. this is the 3rd time in 4 years

when you replaced them did you do it? if you did, have you been oiling the seal prior to instalation? if not your running a risk of burning up the seal and destoying them again and again.

it takes 25mins at tha most to change them unless you need bearings

it will leak--but i am confident they wont burn up--There is oil all over them

no i didnt do it myself. the breather was no working properly. i did replace it myself. im just wondering if its safe to drive from florida to colorado and fix it when i arrive there, or am i taking a rish of it completly blowing out and loosing all the fluid and sitting on the side of the road waiting on a tow truck

How bad is it leaking? If it is a few drops at the time i wouldnt worry and check it from time to time. Buy the oil that comes in the rocket kinda shaped bottle so you dont need a pump to fill the pumpkin. If it is not gushing then i wouldnt worry to much. Mine leaks but it isnt the seal--it is the O-ring

hmm..interesting. i am going to jax. tommorrow. it is about 130 mile one way trip so i plan to check it when i get back. if its not ozzzing down the back of the rim and the tire then im thinking that i might just bring some "rocket shaped bottles of oil " on the raosd trip. i just dont want to be like my dad who owns a 2005 for f-250 and stop at ever rest area from florida to alabama and fillin the pumpkin. he never knew his was leaking it just blew out.another thing, when i did my brakes shoes this past weekend they were covered in bearring like grease instead of the usual fowl smelling rear fluid and the wheel cylinder came apart when the shoes i took the shoes off so i did replace both wheel cylinders because the grease had no smell and i was"hoping" that was my problem. but i just checked yesturday and i have fluid in my drum again so im just assuming that it is my axle seal even though it has no distinctive smell to it

Without being there it sounds like brake fluid. Has that been holding steady level wise? Whether it is brake fluid or Diff oil it will look like grease because it is mixing with the brake dust. Unless either one is leaking like crazy

The brake fluid has been fine. I havent filled it up in 8 months. When i noticed it low i ws hoping that was the problem, but where else would it leak fron inside the drum except the wheel cylinder which is nice and dry around it still...i dont think if it was axle fluid that the brake dust would get rid of the stink smell.
