Re-lamped my 3rd gen. Runner w/ Plug-n-Play LED bulbs

It depends on your lens & reflectors, pnp LED bulbs can work great if you know how to choose them. Besides, more powerful models are coming out regularly, they will eventually catch up to 'high-performance' (bluish) incandescent bulbs.

My Runner's front is 2002 while its tail light harness is still 1998. Tail lights are TYC.

Below: Parking Light (white lens) = 194 (5x white wLED). Front Turn Signal (white lens) = 7440 (15x amber LED).

Below: Tail Light (red lens) = 7443 (15x red LED). Rear Turn Signal (red lens) = 7440 (15x red LED).

Below: Backup Light (white lens) = 7440 (15x white LED).

I will do the same for all the interior bulbs soon.

Looks nice and bright. What bulbs will you use for the interior? The xenon from the other thread or LED's?

I will try to use LED for the interior too wherever I can. But I can imagine that for certain applications like those delayed-dimming interior lights, I'll need to stick w/ high-performance incandescents. So in the end I may get mixed for the interior & 100% LED & HID for the exterior.

BTW, this is what my 7440/7443 bulb looks like. Whether its red or amber or white, the housing is still clear so that's cool. Each has 9x LEDs shooting forward + 6x LEDs shooting sideways. As technology advances, they will manage to jam in even more diodes which translates into higher output.

I sell 'em via my automotive site: http://www.sigmaauto.com/lighting/main.php . I plan to shoot a daytime video to show how they perform *during the day*. If there's enough interest here, I can organize a group-buy and offer everyone discounts. Let me know please.

I'm such a nerd, LEDs are like my only mod. I guess its because they're really easy. Right now, I'm looking into the parking light/turn signal mod. I'm looking to get 1157 LED lamps that have 18 superwhite forward facing diodes, and 6 amber side facing diodes. Ever heard of something like that?

I know exactly what you are looking for:

But wait, I answered a lil' too quick, you want a mixed of 2 different LED colors? Nope, I have never encountered anything like that and may I ask why you want to mix colors? What color of lens is this 1157 going into? Clear lens?

Just the standard 2nd gen parking light lenses. I'm going to cut out the stock socket and wire it to be a signal as well. I just thought the two colors would look sweet from straight on, white light with amber reflector. Probably not going to happen.

Edited for horrible English.

I doubt something like that will come out....most are only looking for solid colors.
The superwhite LEDs are quite new (I think within 4-5 years) so the intensity should increase over time with engineering design.
Best part is they are super bright, use less power and last practically forever if you don't run at too high a voltage.
Only thing I doubt they will replace will be the headlights, but you never know.

If you re-enigneer the whole thing, sure you could do almost anything.
I doubt it has current mainstream potential like the other LED replacements you are selling.
This doesn't mean it can't come later.

Look at the footprint of this thing (and it put out about as much as a standard 30W bulb):
http://www.luxeonstar.com/item.php?i...rtno=LXHL-MWJA

I think they may eventually get it if they go integrated LEDs, but manufacturing costs will go up dramatically as a direct result of it (look how expensive plasma and LCD TVs were when they came out)....then more you integrate, the more rejects you get because of it (until you have improved the manufacturing to begin reducing this number).

It is really the power efficiency of the LED which makes the technology so promising.

Hey Ryan, sorry that I beat you to it.

To Jamie, at this time, nothing beats the intensive output of HID headlights, but like you said, it is just a matter of time when LED headlights will replace HID ones. Actually high-intensity LED diodes (eg: Luxeon) also create heat problem. This and the fact that HID + the proper projector enables a super sharp cut-off line which is so attractive to many, HID will sure remain as the optimal choice for headlamps for many years to come.

So,how much would it run to do the tails, corners unluding the doo-hickies that fool your Runner into not thinking the lights aren't burned out?

Daytime video of plug-n-play LED bulbs for 3rd gen. 4R

These videos were filmed during day time, they give you a better idea of how these plug-n-play LED bulbs perform. Still photos can be decieving esp. when I snapped those pics. at night time. You may view these w/ QuickTime or WindowsMediaPlayer.

~ 1st video shows the front turn signal blinking from a clear lens. Each bulb uses 15x amber LED diodes. Bulb body is clear so nothing shows when it is off.

Front Turn Signal LED bulb - 4.69MB AVI format

~ 2nd video shows the TYC tail lights with all 3 LED bulbs (signal, back-up, parking) on.

Rear Tail Light LED bulbs - 2.79MB AVI format

Please note that LED bulbs don't always work well, if you have diffused (ie: translucent) lens covers or non-glossy reflector surfaces, they won't work too well. You should probably stick w/ high-performance incandescents like POLARG / RAYBRIG.

So how would they work in 2nd Gen turn signals/ tails?
