It's most likely the hydraulic cam-chain adjuster. It operates with oil pressure, and until the pressure comes up, the cam-chain can rattle around a bit.

i dont know the oil, it was replaced before i bought it but its an OEM filter. I am gonna go over all the fluids and filters and replace em. It doesnt matter what the temperature is and the oil is 10w-40. I didnt think the 22re had hydrolic cams

I'm assuming the rattling is coming from the engine bay right?
Back when I had my Dodge it rattled real bad when it was cold because the cat converter was shot. Of course it's a "rear end" rattle though.

the 22re does not have a hydraulic cam, but it does have a hydraulic cam chain tensioner, my bet is that your due for a timing chain

Are you talking about piston slap? Every 22re I've ever heard does that, but then your 85 should do it too. It's the skirtless pistons, they clack for a few seconds at start up. When this motor first came out, everyone thought it was a problem and some people got downright nuts about it. Turned out Toyota was right - the motors lasted and lasted.... Mine did that every morning for the 172,000 miles I owned it.

My 85 doesnt do it at all, but my 92 does it until the engines warms up every morning. Was kinda worried at first but guess I'll drive it till something gives then worry with it.

not to highjack your thread but...i have a 96 with 188k. when it gets cold and i first start it up, there is a high pitched squeeling sound. anyone know what that is? it goes away after 10-15 seconds.
