Questions on regearing/tires

I have a few questions about regearing/tires. Sorry if they have been asked before but I searched for the past hour and can't seem to find the answers.

How hard of a job is it to regear a 94 p/u? Any special tools needed? What about expetise? I am mechanically inclined.

Using 32 inch tires should I regear from stock?

What about 33 inch tires?

What is everyones opinion on tires? I would like a relatively cheap tire, I am willing to pay 450-600 completly installed on my stock rims. I would like 32-12.50. Is this width too big for stock rims?

Thanks for the help
GREATLY appreciated

Jason

1. There are a few special tools involved. I've never set up gears, but I've installed lockers and I will find somebody to set up my gears when I get around to doing them.

2. I have 32x10.50 Super Swampers on my junk, and they run taller than most 32"s. You'll definitely notice the lack of power if you run stock gears with 32"s or 33"s, but I can still cruise about 80 mph in 5th gear in my rig with 180,000 miles on it.

3. The widest tire you'll want to run on stock rims is 11.50. Find a 32x11.50 in your price range and go for it. Remember that mud tires will be louder and get worse mileage than all terrains, but it's worth it.

Hey Jason.Love your avatar!!!
What are the advantages of a mudder over an aggressive All terain. I like mudding but getting to the other side of the trail is the most impotant to me. I have heard terra grapplers are good? I have 30 x 9.50's now and they seem so small. And they are b.f goodrich all terrains and I think the pattern is pretty plain. I want AGGRESSIVE. Lol.

Thanks

I would suggest BFG M/Ts. I have 32x11.50 BFG A/Ts on my Jeep and they suck in even the tiniest bit of mud.

The 32" Swampers on my truck are great (I actually have some 36" Swampers in the garage waiting to go on the truck), but it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for.

The BFG M/Ts are a pretty good tire for all conditions.

I would stay away from cheap, no-name mud terrains. They're horribly loud, ride like crap, and have flimsy sidewalls.

you could also , for cheaper than a BFG , get procomp muds that have great traction, and strong sidewalls.......I run through 3 sets of them 31's, 33's and my 35's are almost gone, now. check out www.4wheelparts.com for the Procomps, etc...

definately regear !!! I went with 5:29's, and it crawls great at the 'Con, etc...you'll love the power of a regear !!! I'm glad I didn't go with 4:88's, because I would probably have had to chage them for my 5:29's for my 35's and next 36" swampers.

another vote for the procomp muds. i got mine for 580 last week cause they were on sale, buy 3 get 1 free. Then i paid 65ish for the mount and balance using equal. they are pretty quiet and smooth on the highway and did very well in the deep snow i was in last weekend. Not mud yet though, this ˟˟˟˟˟˟ snow needs to melt first. Sorry, i'm a little sick of winter and snow.

I'm sick of it too but my boss's house that we are building has a mud lawn at the moment and I LOVE IT. Every morning and evening, coming and going, I thow another coat on the Tacoma I wonder how often they have the sale on pro comps. I was actually looking at them but this sale ends at the end of the month. It will be a little while before I buy them. Anyone know how often the buy 3 get 1 sale is on?
Ok. I'm off to put the reman 22re back together before the snow does melt and I'm left with no off road truck.

Happy trails,
Jason

the dude at the place i got my procomps said they do it twice a year, but i'm not sure if 4wheelparts.com does it more often. I heard on here that this april, some stores are running a buy 3 get 1 free on goodyears. I'm pretty sure lee was saying that it was a store by him in boston, ma. He was gonna get some Goodyear MTR's, which i have heard some great things about. If the goodyear guy i went to didn't quote me 1200 bucks for them, i would have gone with them, but it was a no brainer moneywise for the procomps.

if you have never redone gears before , i would suggest not trying it yourself, this is something a novice should not attempt... i have pretty much done everything to my truck including the bl, suspension, maintenance, engine swap, reworked head and gasket (so i am pretty mechanically inclined) and would not attempt gears myself
