Questions about road trip gear
Hey guys, Iam gonna be going on a week long road trip all around southwestern British Columbia and I just wondering if any of you could give me some advice on recovery gear and the like. I will be travelling by myself and Iam pretty confortable with what I can do and what I cant. I've got a '93 SR5 with the swaybars removed, 31'' BFG Muds and have done Air box mod. So far the list of recovery gear goes as follows:
- 1 x 30' Heavy duty come-along
- 2 x 20' H-D tow straps
- 1 x million candle power hand held spot light
- 2 x spare tires
- 1 x tire repair kit
- All neccessary replacment oils and fluids
- Stock jack with several 2x4's for ground contol
- 3 x 5'' shackels
- 1 x fire extinguisher
- misc. tools
So ther ya have it. I think that should be good, but just wondering if you guys would have any feed back. I thought about buying one of those 12v d.c. air compressors that plug into the cigarette lighter, and Iam still thinking bout it. But what about a hi-lift jack? The stock jack should be o.k. with the 2x4's underneath it to keep it level right? As it is I dont think a hi-lift would work for me as I dont have sliders and I've got stock bumpers. Correct me if Iam wrong here. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appretiated. Thanks, Lee.

the hi-lift works fine on stock bumpers if you use the 'bumper saver' deelie they sell separately. if you want to go tech on the hi-lift, look into the 'jack mate' too. sweet gear!
do not discount the compressor. if you use it, you will never stop using it. bring your tires down to 20 - 25 psi offroad, improve handling, traction and power throughput. bring your tires back up to pressure on the highway. no problem.
only other thing would be a partner! there is no substitute when it comes to safety. happy trails-

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, I've got the first aid kit covered as with an ample supply of toilet paper. But about the jumper cables Mark... when on earth am I ever gonna use those?!? j/k... yeah i got those too. But the large piece of plastic... awesome idea!!! Never even thouught of it. And Bktaco... thanks for letting me know of the hi-lift bumper saver thingy. I didnt even know they made that. Yup, just another thing to go on the wish list. I think I will get the compressor, you know just in case. As it is, I most certainly will be airing down to 20-25 psi. So now I can air back up on the trail!! And having a partner while driving... yeah you cant beat that, but this is gonna be a trip just for me ya know?... kinda trying to find myself if that makes any sense at all. But thanks for all the input.. greatly appretiated. Keep it coming!! :bounce2:

I keep a good supply (6-7) of MREs behind my back seat in my truck. You never know when you need some food
A good supply of Cliff Bars in the center console is always good too.

MY VOTE IS FOR MRE'S. 3,000 calories in one sitting and no use for that toilet paper for at least a week...know what I'm driving at, the military boys will. hee hee! You can usually get them at surplus stores for $5-7 bucks a pop. Although, that may be the military rate. I dunno. I have never had to buy them as a civiy.
I think chili mac is the best, but there are some new types that I haven't tried??? Anyway, I always trade for chilli mac. They have a kool-aid mix and some coffee mix, crackers, tabasco, and all sorts of shizz that add up to 3,000 calories per MRE. Good to go with a case for a two weeks under $70 bucks. BY FAR THE BEST WAY TO GO IF YOUR "BACKPACKING"!

i thought that's what the MRE's where...i've had a couple, family member used to work at a local base... those things are cool!
Clif bar, NOW i get it! haven't had the pleasure (not sure i really want it either) of tasting one.... lol. Once i ate a diet/energy bar that was really old and was cookies and cream....
MAN that thing was so dry, it would do a good job at making you drink lots of water cause...JEEZ it was so...chalky and chewy...just gross. i'm sure that clif bar is much better...

my god... dont even mention MREs around me. i had to go for 3 weeks straight on MREs at MCT after boot camp. sure they'll clog you up for the first week... but when you do have to go, it feels like your giving birth. and you'll have to go like crazy after that. people will say you're full of crap and you'll say "you're right!"

Yes that's another thing. Water! Always got to have water!
All the energy bars are going to be a bit on the dry side. I happen to enjoy Clif bars though. Much better than Power bars.

Beer. For God's sake, man -- don't forget the beer. Especially if you're hoping to find yourself, and just in case you find someone else. ;-)
Never hurts to have some of the good ol' liquid panty remover with ya.
