Question on "Type R" Diff Breather Mod
Read this article http://4runners.org/writeups/typerdiff/index.html. I traverse through some deep water sometimes so this would be a good idea regardless. My questioning came into play when I read this bit
"Thanks to some rather specious sources, I acquired a very "special" differential plug that allowed my differential to breathe easier and amazingly add an additional 50 rear wheel horsepower"
Has anyone ever dealt with this Type R breather. And is this supposed 50 horsepower a joke? Also I'm looking for this air hose to use for the extension line. I saw a yellow one that this t4r.org member had and it looked sick. Any comments/details would be appreciated

Let's bring logic into this equation. In order for you to gain hp, you first must have some sort of combustion or reaction within the engine itself. i.e. Supercharger, headers and so on.
Now the OEM diff breather in question is located on the rear axle housing. In "lamen's tems" (sp?), this breather simply allows pressure (or heat in most cases) to escape within the diff.
The "diff breather mod" is simply a way to move that breather valve higher out of harms way....mostly to avoid water from entering the breather while it's open.
So you must ask yourself this very simple question: Would it be humanly possible to gain horsepower simply by extending a breather valve on a diff via a rubber tube??
The answer...NO.
Oh and the yellow air hose he used, it's just a simple air hose that can be purchased at most hardware stores. i.e. Lowe's, Home Depot and so on. Should be able to find it or something similar.

Type R" Diff Breather Mod
I think I'm going to give this a shot,... not for the bogus HP gain but to keep water out of my diff when backing my boat into the river. I ran the part numbers past the closest Toy dealer here and he said he didn't show a match.

Diff Breather Mod Parts List:
Here is the list of parts needed to complete the diff breather mod:
The two main parts from Toyota are:
1. 90404-51319 Union
2. 90930-03136 Plug, breather
Should be no more than $15.00.
The other parts you can pick up at a local parts store:
1. 3/8" fuel line hose...about 6 ft
2. 1/4" - 5/8" hose clamps (get a couple of them)
3. Zip ties
I ran the tube from the axle and up next to the gas tank filler neck. The breather valve exits next to the gas cap. If you want to see a shot of the breather resting next to my gas cap, check out my profile for a picture of it.

dood I did this mod, and I gained 56hp, dyno proven!
dont listen to all these naysayers who haven't even tried the mod on their truck. My 4Runner is so quick now. I just beat a Yenko Camaro the other day. Pulled him HARD at the light. He got out at the parking lot we turned into, and was like "what you got in THAT thing?"
Me: 22RE, with some "secret" power adders
Him: CMon man, you gotta tell me waht you did
Thats when I explained to him the diff breather mod. He was pretty amazed that such a small/cheap mod could net such generous hp gains.
SO Rockslide, Rocko, TJ, Rust, and all you others, stop with holding secrets, and help the guy out! Sometimes you YT regulars can be so mean.....

I just wanted to add, though i'm unsure about this, if you live in CA you might not want to punch a hole through the area of the gas filler and gasket. I know that they have some messed up smog laws out there and I am sure that modifing the actual neck will fail you acorrding to the laws. I would just run it as high in the rear as you can and call it good!

I thought this was funny since I actually owned a Type R (not a fake badged Integra). The "Type R Diff Breather" just refers to the popularity of fake Type R stickers that people put on their Kia's and even Mustangs who think they're fast.
"It ain't a tight car, if it ain't a Type R; if it ain't a Type R, it ain't a tight car."

jesus...i get off of work and this thread has been revived like a mofo....not like that's a good thing cause its one of the stupidest things i've ever asked. oh well haha....death cougar, you don't even know what you got rid of. the ac compressor you sold me had a secret community of hidden dwarves that, once installed, worked their way to the engine and is now giving me 200 extra horses! i thought those damned underpants gnomes just did it in for the entire small people community, but these guys are proving me wrong!
