I've got a 2000 4runner I'm interested in putting new speakers in. I already put in a new Kenwood 252u system but still want a little more quality coming out of the car.

The big thing for me is that I want to avoid having to cut or heavily mod anything on my door panels, but when I look at crutchfield, they're saying whether I go 6.5 or 5.25 I'll need to modify the door panels.

Is this true?

Lastly, when I hooked up my new stereo I did not use the factory amp. Will connecting the factory amp to the stereo system give me a boost in power or will the 50watts of peak output from the Kenwood do better?

I just installed the Kenwood 352 and used the factory amp. It makes static on the FM channels so now I need to bypass the amp with a new harness and just run it off the head unit. The 50Wx4 should be plenty to run any basic speaker system you install.

should of bought a adapter harness that ties into the two plugs after the amp ditch the factory amp all together

the rear doors will need a set of adaptor plates to accommodate aftermarket 5.25 speakers. teh fronts should need little to no modification depending on the speakers you want to install. You should buy some toyota speaker harnesses, so all you do is plug them in and you are done. no cutting or splicing wires that you are unsure of. in theory you cant run your aftermarket speakers with the factory JBL amp due to differences in ohm load. You should get enough power out of the aftermarket kenwood to drive the speakers, again depending on what you buy. alpine makes a very small, "add on amp" prob similar size to the factory amp in the runner now. I think it sells for around $130? but it will boost your radios out put to a true 50 watts per channel as opposed to the realistic 15-20 you will get out of the radio.

6.5s + tweeter components up front and 6.5s coaxials in back. I didnt use the OE amp and the 50w per channel belts out some good sound YMMV.

I have a Pioneer headunit, wire harness to install and Alpin V series components in the front and coaxial Alpines in the rear. You can go to 4Runner.org I think and print out a template to make an adapter for the rear speakers, super easy to do and saves a ton of money. Be sure to read the instructions when you print it out though! Ditch the factory amp, won't need it with the power from the aftermarket headunit.
