Question about my 4 runner rear window problems / security

hello everyone
I have a 2000 4-runner . In the mournings i wake up and go to get in it and from time to time my rear window is all the way rolled down. This has happened several times and i am not sure how. This mourning it happened again and i know forsure i did not leave it down since my wife and i was using the AC full blast when we parked it due to the crazy heat here. Has anyone heard of this happening? I am just glad it has not rained yet when this happened. Is there a fuse i can pull to stop the operation of the rear window? Also is the rear window ver secure from thieves? I live in a bad neighborhood so it could be someone has been rolling it down getting in and searching around for valuables and leaving without a trace besides the rolled down window. Please if anyone can send me some info i would really appreciate it.

take care
Justin

I say drive the car around and then park, turn it off, and wait to see if the window rolls itself down automatically (possible if you have a wiring problem somewhere.) If nothing happens, I would suspect foul play. You could set up a sort of sting operation to try to catch anyone that might be trying to get into your truck, by parking it and then watching it or videoing (sp?) it.

Do some searching on here as i have seen this problem come up before. I doubt its anyone doing it, but when its down im not sayin no one has been in there. Do you have the rear window control on your remote entry? You may be hitting it by accident.

sounds like you are accidentally hitting the rear window button on your remote.

It also could be a bad motor not being able to hold the window up. You know the gears letting loose and letting the weight of the window being able to go down. It may take awhile to do it, like overnight. So if you are home on a weekend, and the vehicle is in the garage or driveway. Do what you normally do when you park the truck and then come back to the truck, let's say every hour. If it goes down slightly then it is hte motor. If it were a fuse, as you mentioned then it wouldn't roll up or down. Sounds like a bad motor not being able to hold the window up. But do a check like I mentioned above first.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. I do have a remote with window function on it. I never use the function on my remote so does anyone know how to disable it? This will eliminate one possible cause. I am going to start locking my windows when i get home at night so hopefully this will elimanate anyone using the key roll down to get into my runner through the rear window. I have also thought about it being a short and rolling down after i park it but i have never had it roll down by itself anywhere but at home during the night. Its a wierd problem to say the least. I have searched the topic and found one post that helped me out somewhat but my problem does not match the persons post. His window does not want to roll back up but mine rolls up fine. I am going to keep an eye on window over the next few days to see what happens.

take care
Justin

I highly doubt anyone would/could push your rear window down, and to do it multiple times without stealing anything would be crazy.

You could take the back panel off the lift gate and disconnect the wires going to the motor for a few days. If you find it rolled down again then you will at least know its not an electrical problem.

Other thing to think about, are there any other 4runners in your neighborhood? Its possible someone else has your frequency for the rear window.

if you lock the windows it will not stop the function of the remote switch. i just tried. as mentioned in the thread i posted in my reply try to disablle the switch first in the remote before you start opening the gate. i just opened up my remote, and you can either tapes something hard over the button, or completely remove the switch from the circuit board(dont know how so not recommending)

Rear window controller has gone south? Last time I checked for my old 86 Runner, in like 1991, it was around $400.00 for the controller.

I took it out of the system and used a 6 pin rocker switch to operate the rear window.

I'm 100% sure your problem is the remote...... I've lost count how many time my rear window was down, when I went out in the morning, the latest was yesterday... If the remote is on a ring of keys and you put it in your pocket, it can activate the window.

There is a TSB on this issue. It's a software gremlin in the ECM. See thread

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/rear-window-has-gone-insane-86705/

I've attached the TSB there...

Simple solution is to press the "lock windows" button when you exit the car and problem solved... Or, you could fix according to the TSB, but that'll run you about 300 bux.

This is not true with my truck. Even with the window lock on, the rear window still open via remote, but not by inside switch. It is more than likely you hitting the button on your remote that is causing the window to come down. All it takes is a slight tap of the button ie: keys or change in your pocket etc.

Guys, read my above post. The unintended rear window roll down has nothing to do with accidentlally hitting the remote. It's a bug in the rear window ECM... If you were lucky enough to recognize it under warranty, Toyo took care of it. If you bought your rig used, like many of us, out of warranty, you're out of luck. Unless you want to spend the dough to buy a new ECM and transponder, the fix is just to leave the lock button at night, like I do. My rear window has never unintentionallly rolled down since. And it still works remotely from the transponder fob.

Cool, So to clarify for future. AsTyou stated the two items are not related in the problem, but just the item (rear window). The window may have the ecu glitch that causes it to go down whenever it likes, but to overcome this brain fart press the window lock button. And even though the window will go down with the remote while the windows are locked, the window will not go down due to the ecu problem. If its the accidental hit of the button, well the only fix is to get less keys on your ring, or stop playing pocket pool.

"The window lock will not stop the rear window from rolling down. We tried."

Jev, the window lock button will stop the rear window from rolling down, from the control INSIDE the truck. It does not effect the roll down from the fob. But this will STOP the unintended, phantom roll down of the window, which is what I think you want. It works for me, is all I can say, and I know it works for many others affected with this glitch.
