A sprained knee kept me off the mountain bike today, so the Runner got some attention. I've known for awhile that my power steering pump was going to go soon - been making some noise. I checked it out today and the pulley shaft has developed some in/out play. I'm pretty sure this is more than can be fixed with just the seal kit (especially since I stopped all of the leaks a year or so ago). Anyone have any experience rebuilding these? I'd like to do it myself if possible since aftermarket rebuilts are running about $100. A new Toyota pump is out of the question since I may be jobless or moving soon.

If you think you have the ability to rebuild it, do it. The whole purpose of doing things yourself is to save money. In the process you learn which is always good.

Power steering is not really essential. It will give you a bit of arm excercise if the pump is out of it for a few days.

If it's just needs a seal kit then I can take care of it, no problem. The play in the shaft is what worries me. I'm afraid I'm going to need so many parts and special tools that I'd come out ahead by just replacing the whole thing.

speaking of the seal kit, i just ordered one from toyota and i'm going to do it myself. are there any special tools i'll need? and are there any tricks/tips to do this or is it pretty much straight forward? i'm pretty new to auto mechanics in general so if anyone would want to give me a basic description on what i have to do to pull the pump out etc... that would be very much appreciated

TTT - Im thinking about rebuilding mine due to its leaking. Difficulties, need to know things, or things to look out for?

(Basically HOW do I change the seals, where are the seals, etc)
