Problems with '99 Limited digital climate control - only display, or compressor?

Hi there - I've been a long-time reader, but this is my first post. Usually I'm good at finding answers...but I'm stumped here. When it's been awhile since I've started the car, I turn it on and the digital display for climate control blinks (all of the backlights in the display) and no air blows. If you turn the car off and back on, it no longer blinks and it returns to your last used settings, and air blows at the right temp. However, it is "stuck" here and won't allow me to change the temp or any settings until I've driven the car for 5-15 minutes. After that, all works like it's supposed to, until next time.

It's annoying, but something I can possibly just live with....however, wanted to make sure it's not a simple repair first. I've seen everything from $150 to rebuild the digital display, to $2000 to replace the compressor, etc. Any advice? I don't want to pay $150 to rebuild the display if the problem is not just electrical, and don't want to pay $150 for a diagnostic test at the mechanic + any service (dealership said best case, o-rings @ $650 and worst case new compressor @ 2000) if it's not necessary. Anyone else had this problem? I appreciate it!
