so my 99 has 150k miles on it, and Id rather not replace a transmission. should i go with an external cooler or a whole new radiator? any advantages to either? I think if i went with a new radiator, id go with the Koyo- its a well known name.. but im curious- woudl the koyo have its own internal tranny cooler just like the stock rad does?

what has everyone else done? obviously jsut replacing the tranny cooler would be the cheapest way to go, but at 150k, maybe i should jsut pop for a new radiator too?

there has been a lot of conversation on this topic recently. an external cooler is relatively cheap and not too hard to install (from what i've heard). also gives you superior cooling and the guarantee the coolant and atf wont ever mix. there are some who question if it's too much cooling, especially if you live in cold climate and you don't tow/haul an excessive amount to warrrant the extra cooling. replacing the stock radiator with a good aftermarket radiator is the other popular method. there is still the potential for the coolant and atf to mix but a new radiator should last you a long time. if the stock one with an obvious defect lasted this long a good aftermarket should do just as well. i just ordered a koyo a1198 from go-part.com ($160 shipped) on monday and i got it in the mail last night. looks the same as stock and has all the same connections and features of the stock, minus the defect hopefully. hope this helps.

edit - to answer your main question: the stock radiator has the tranny cooler built in, its at the bottom of the radiator so it's just one unit.

FYI - I think the koyo part number is A1998 - prob a typo by yota man.

Yes, a1998. thanks. It goes in this weekend. I haven't drove the truck all week cause I'm scared its going to milkshake right before I change it. How bad would that suck!

I just ordered the koyo , cheapest place I found it was ebay for 124$ shipped. .

Ill also be running a B&M oil cooler to just to help keep the temp down in the summer.

You can choose either one or both like I did. Im running both cause of the cold new england winters. for same reasons spokane said.

I installed a separate cooler and have had no problems with it. The installation was easy and I have a lot more peace of mind knowing I won't get the milkshake ever. Living in Texas I value having extra cooling, but it may not be as critical for you guys up North.

love the external cooler; the peace of mind is great! Such an easy (and relatively cheap) "ounce of prevention". Good choice!

I've bypassed mine with the B&M Supercooler, install could not be easier. I used the strips to attach it through the AC condenser, as I didn't want to reposition it when I replace my radiator - it has an external leak somewhere. Apart from the Koyo a1198 which I'm sure is a great OEM replacement but now has a tranny cooler I don't need, are there any other aftermarket drop-in radiators?

FWIW, I believe I payed ~$33 for my B&M Super Cooler from Advanced Auto using the discount codes and free shipping.

Install was quite easy. Hardest part was trying to find the best location. I used two existing bolts/holes in the core support. I only drilled one hole for a bolt, washers and nut. I didnt even need to trim the metal brackets
