91Runner

I was browsing the forums on Nissan Offroad and came across a picture of the aftermath of a 4Runner going up the Lion's Back in Moab (?) From what the people were saying, the guys (age 16-18) driving the 4Runner were going up the Lion's Back while another group was coming down, and ended up rolling down. Forunately everyone survived, although some had serious injuries. From what the guys were saying there's also a video of it somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it.

From the looks of it, I Think it's a 2nd Gen (possibly a 3rd).

Anyone else seen this?

Yeah, that happened last year. It's a 2nd gen and supposedly it's been stripped of eveything usable. There's no vid that I know of, but a reporter took pictures as it happened. If you search 4x4wire there should be links to the article.

I think I saw that on Worst Case Senario on TBS. Ya'll have all seen the video of the woman in the K5 Blazer coming down lions back when her brakes went out and they hit grille first and turnover. Well worst case senario found them and they hadn't been wheelin since so they got an expert to train her how to do it and she went down it in a stock Wrangler Rubicon and they showed down the side of lions back and showed a wreckage that looks like it. and I'd say from the tag frame it's a 2nd GEN may it RIP

Didn't that happen sometime last year, that thing is probably stripped to the frame. Poor 2nd gen, let it R.I.P

Its a 2nd gen. Notice no 3rd brake light? It's a 90-93. When it happened I wondered if there were usable parts from it but by the time they went back almost everything on it was gone. They even took out the transfer and tranny! You'd need a heavy duty crane to lift that thing out of there so there it will stay.

What worries me is if people who don't drive intelligently keep doing this pretty soon there will be no open areas for us. I used to rock climb in high school at Hueco Tanks - its supposed to be a top 10 rock climbing area. Because inexperienced idiots kept trying to climb 3+ areas and getting seriously injured or killed they have new rules. Many of the best areas are now closed off and you have to rent a park ranger for a fee to watch you climb if you are going to climb at all.

Oh, and then they dragged each other around on a board behind the lowered accord. At least they had a helmet on.

I must admit, it was entertaining. But stupid.

I'm glad that everyone survived the mishap. The driver should be responsible to get that mangled P.O.S. out of there. Is it still there?

Can you imagine how hard that would be to get that out of there. I mean the cost alone would be sky-high. They may just leave it there to rust away. That is what I would do. You would need a real big wrecker to "lift" it out, and I doubt that they would do that with that kind of terrain. It sucks to be them! :fireman:

If that area is as dry as I think it is, that thing will probably be there for the next 500 years or more! Too bad. Some of the old mining gear you see rusting away is interesting. Maybe in time this too will be more of an interesting relic than it seems right now.

Recovering it would probably take a helicopter and tons of ground labor. I'm sure nothing is left of it except dammaged body panels as scavengers raid everything off of any abandoned vechicle.

I got to see that in person last May (the wrecked 4Runner). A sad sight indeed. It is in a location such that it seems to me the only way to remove it would be with a helicopter or an enormous crane (that could reach over the lion's back). It is on private property.

There's an old mangled car (I think it's a Triumph TR7) out at Kilbourne's hole. It's been there for at least 20 years and it'll be there for at least 500 more. That's why you buy 4Runners from the SW...no rust. Yes, the driver should be held responsible for getting it out...as we all should. I don't consider vehicles a colorful addition to the landscape. And it'll wind up being in a pictorial essay on the destructiveness of offroading.

Wheel responsibly...and help clean up after those that don't.

I have a '90 2nd Gen, and seeing that REALLY makes me sick to my stomach. At least everyone inside lived. Poor yota...RIP

I've been mountain biking in that area, and honestly would be too scared (or smart) to try driving Lion's back.
