I just purchased a 2003 Tacoma V6 3.4L XCab Manual Transmission with 78,000 miles on it. I took it to Toyota to have the oil changed and they said I have a good size power steering leak coming from the pump. They quoted me $374 to repair using their re-seal kit from Toyota.

I don't mind trying to do this myself if it is a fairly easy repair, which from what I have read so far looks as if that is the case. What should I do?

1. Take to Toyota for the work?
2. Purchase a re-seal kit and do it myself?
3. Purchase a new Toyota Power Steering Pump from Toyota and do the work myself?
4. Purchase a rebuilt (NAPA, Schucks, Autozone) and do the work myself?

Should I stay with Toyota parts, just get the re-seal kit, or get a re-built?

I just rebuilt the pump on my 01 4Runner, 3.4 V6. It was a fairly easy job, anyone with basic mechanical skills should be able to do it. About 3 hours including removing and replacing. I got a seal kit from http://www.pskits.com/. I would definitely try rebuilding yours with a seal kit first, the worst that could happen is you waste $20, and a few hours of your time.

Are the genuine Toyota parts superior to the rebuilt parts? I am just wondering if the price difference is worth it.

Yep mine leak's a bit that's not the only leak my 4runner has lol.

Don't know, but the local dealer wanted $50 for a seal kit so I went with pskits.com. Check the price of the seal kit at your local dealer and decide if it's worth it. Sometimes with seals and bearings the aftermarket parts are the same brand as the oem part.

I wouldn't have Toyota do it. They always seem to figure out a way how to get extra $$ from you. Just my experience.... I'd do something like that myself to save $$

IMO most aftermarket parts are just as good as deal items. I'd try to rebuild it myself. Worst case pick up a rebuilt from napa or where ever and swap it.
