Power Antenna blowing fuses

I replaced my antenna mast today. I took the motor completely out of the car by releasing the top of the assembly which goes over the mast. Since the cable was broken this allowed the rest of the assembly to come out. I removed the broken cable section inside the housing. I then fed my new mast in and got it working on the ground using a 12v battery I had in the garage. I got it going up and down by reversing the polarity. Works great. Now I hook it back up and as soon as the radio is turned on immediately a fuse blows.

Its definitely the antenna blowing the fuse, it is fine when the antenna is unplugged. Any ideas on what could be causing it? Any way I could have put it back together that would do this (but still leave it working on the ground)?

Also, what tells the antenna motor when to stop?

Thanks,
Jesse

Maybe you have a hot wire that is grounded and shorting out the circuit?

not necessairly gonna help your exact problem but i bought a 9 dollar black flexible antenna from wally world and it looks/works great. ive put the same kind on 2 toyotas (both the trucks in my sig) and loved the results both times. its about 13-14 inches tall and flexible so it wont break. the power ones suck. save yourself the hassel and get one of those. every toyota me or my dad has ever owned with a power one has had a broken power one.

Mine works fine after 16 years and 300,000 miles. I threw a switch on it for off road.

I just had the same thing happen to me, yesterday I removed the antenna power unit and removed the broken antenna teeth then put it back together (still waiting for replacement mast to come in mail) and it worked fine although without the power antennna. Today when I tried to play a tape in the deck it blew the fuse for the dome, clock and radio and continues to everytime I try to turn on the radio. Makes me wonder if something got shorted out? if anyone has any luck with this please post your findings.
Thanks,

I found my problem, when I dissassembled the antenna unit to remove the plastic teeth I loosened the two screws for the actual motor housing and lifted it just enough before closing it to dislodge the brushes. One broke and was causing a short. The Good news is I found my problem and the bad news is now I need a new antenna motor/housing. Hopefully someone else doesn't make the same misstake I did.

Thanks for the offer Ron but another Yotatech member already beat you to it. I'll keep you in mind though in case there are any issues.
