Cool Potential Newbie, several tech questions??

Hi everyone,

I have always been a diehard nissan fan, but today I have the opportunity to trade a mustang for a 1996 4 Runner. Honestly I know NOTHING about these vehicles. I have done several lifts on Nissans, Jeeps and all sorts of domestics but I am unfamiliar with the issues of a 4runner. Someone recommended this site so here I am... First are there any issues I should look for? Second as for lifting and off road prowess what is the limit for someone with shallow pockets? (300-500 dollars) How would money best be spent on this 4 runner? Tire size limitations? and lastly are there any mods that are very popular and SHOULD be done? ....I have skimmed this site and I must say I am very impressed, nicely organized and very helpful.. Thanks!!

I think you'll become a Toyota fan.
I had a '99 4runner, which is virtually the same as a '96 and found it to be quite capable in stock form. The rear coil spring set up articulates nicely. You can fit 265/75's with no lift, and with your current budget I'd recommend slipping in a traction aid, like a limited slip or locker. I had very good results with a rear Detroit Trutrac, and eventually put one up front, and it became quite and animal. I gave it a budget minded 2.5 inch spacer lift up front with OME 2.5 inch coils in the rear. This done over time did not break the bank and gave me an extremely trail worthy grocery getter, back country explorer/camping rig.

WELCOME to YOTATECH!!

Yeah, it's a strut type set up in the front. Just like on Frontiers
