It goes by model code not by the axle code. If the door sticker says yours came with 225/75 from the factory then you are most likely running 3.909 gears and the 265s were added after it left the factory, (unless it was regeared at that time as well).
Thanks for that link. That made things a little less broad. However, I have 265s of there now, w/ stock 16" rims. The spare is the same size. Is there any way to tell what came on my specific truck?

Thanks for th help.

It may be best to use that link and check your gearing based on your model number. If the door jamb sticker says 225/75 then I would think that's how Toyota built it and it probably has 3.909 gears. The 265/70 tires were probably added sometime after final assembly.

Based on my model number, there are 3 possibilities. 4.10, 3.909 and 4.30. I'm guessing 3.9 is me, but I'm hoping 4.10 or 4.30 is it! I guess i'll have to get off my but and go do it the spin test way.

Thanks for the help though.

You're welcome. By the way, we can conclusively say the only way you have 4.30 gears is if yours came with the rear locker.

My '96 Taco (B03A) has 3.4, manual, and came stock w/ 31" tires. I believe it is a 4.10 open rear.

Way old thread resurrection...

Axel code G252 ==> 8", 4.56 gears, 2 pinion.

According to offroad.com and visual confirmation on my diff...I have 4 pinion. Difference btwn 2 and 4 pinion is the # of fins on the housing. 2 pinion = 3 fins...4 pinion = 4 fins. So my door jamb plate is labeled incorrectly. Anyone else have this issue?

Is either 2 or 4 pinion better or worse than the other?

Denk,

4 pinion is better/stronger than the 2 pinion.

Maybe your rear axle was replaced?

Cheers!

Don't think it was replaced. The previous original owner kept immaculate service records and there was nothing about it. I read somewhere that the door jamb plates were commonly misprinted. But its good to know about it at least.
