Yeap - keys inside. any way to use a coat hanger? Where is the locking mechanism, what should I shoot for? Ive seen tow truck drivers do it a dozen times or so... =/

I've seen tow truck drivers lose their tools in my door, and have to get more tools to fish out their tools

what vehicle? i have done it on my 85...... several times... theres a lot of tricks you just need to know about though, im a fire dept volunteer, used to be a mechanic and also have worked in the security field, so i have a little knowledge about breaking into cars

I tried. You can't slide it down the doors because of the hard plastic seals. I tried fishing it through the weatherstipping and the door to hit the button, that failed. Had to call pop-a-lock.

for future reference they make a plastic wedge that you hammer between the door and the car to make a slight crack, then you can easily slide a cloths hanger to hit the button....

my key is so word down that i can pull it out of the car while its running..(kind of handy accualy) but anyways ive never had to do the coat hanger thing..can't you just call AAA?

AAA came with that plastic wedge thingy, and unlocked mine in 2 and 2.

Problem is remembering to bring the wedge with you when you forget your keys.

i've heard that first gens can be unlocked by pushing a wendy's drinking straw underneath the handle as it's pulled up.

Here's how it's done on a 2nd gen truck,

When I locked mine in the truck, AAA showed up with a plastic strip about 1" wide and 3' long. A piece of sandpaper was glued in the middle of the strip, and the strip was folded lengthwise with the sandpaper on the inner side of the fold. AAA dood slipped it in-between the rubber strip and the door frame, snagged the door lock with the sandpaper and pulled up.

It was the simplest thing I'd ever seen - and no need to be messing around in the door looking for leverage on the mechanics.

i think keyless and auto locks combined save me here and there from making this mistake. like that you cant lock the door physically if the drivers door is open... and just the fact that i use the remote means i have to have my key in hand outside the runner to lock it.

Was he trying to snag the lock rod or something else?
Was it bent into an L shape fold or a U shape fold?

As a mechanic, most of the time I only used the wedges if I was doing the door for the first time. People would fill up next door and then lock their keys in the car with the engine running.....you should see their faces when they came over to ask you to help em out.

He grabbed the lock puller-upper button thing on the door.

All 4Runners are very easily jimmied with the possible exception of the 4ths.
I live with a Towman who services lockouts for AAA.

AAA actually doesn't have agents, they just sub the work to local tow companies. Anyway, he told me that 4Runners might be the easiest car to get into. Plastic wedge and that flat spatuala thingy with the hook on it.

On the other hand he says Sequioas (man my spelling is bad) are almost impossible, because of a re-lock mechinism in the alarm that relocks the car. PITA, I guess.

Anyway, good luck with the keys...

well, finally got er done. the back window was open. opening was too small to fit an entire arm in, but large enough to slide a 'tool' in. I tried for about an hour before I came up with this genius idea

Picture 1 is the 'tool' I came up with. Yes, that is duct tape you see. The part all the way to the right is something that came with my drink mixing kit, no idea what its used for. The part to the left is the handle of the steak fork (used for BBQ's) that I broke while trying to bend it into a tool to open the door.


Picture 2 is obviously the lock. Yeap, you can figure it out. I heated up the 'tool' to a red hot, slid it in through the back window to make the impression. Cooled off the tool then reinserted and VIOLA.



Better ways to do this? Probably. Best way to pretend that you think you are smart enough to be an astronaut? Probably.
