Possible Tranny, Transfer case, or torque converter problem

after offroading in uwharrie. I pulled my car into the gas station and it cut out on me. I started it up put it in drive and it died. It did this several times until we finally decided to tow it home. We towed it back home pulled codes (p0100,p0110,p0120). I pulled and cleaned every sensor I could find, alon with the throttle body. Started it up and put in gear and it died. I then started it up in 4 lo and put it in drive and it didnt die. Took it out of 4 lo and it drove fine. We drove it to a tranny shop and they couldn't find any thing wrong.

It drove fine for 2 months and one day cut out on me as I was slowing down to stop. I put it in 4 lo repeatedly until it would run in drive and drove it home. I pulled code p0770 something about shift solenoid valve. I dropped the pan and changed solenoid e. I noticed there was a little bit of metal in the pan. Closed everything up and it drove fine. the code never came back. But the problem happened again shortly afterwards.

Running out of ideas I took the truck back to the tranny shop; they found nuthin. I finally broke down and took it to the dealership and they couldnt find anything. they didnt even charge me! they told me the next time it happens dont try to get it going, just tow it over.

Well 3 months later after various trips to the beach and mountains it happened to my wife while she was going to work. Im outta town so she couldnt tow it to the dealer.

I have saved up money to make a major repair on the truck but I don't wanna blindly say rebuild this part and it not take care of my problem.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My 4runner is currently in the hospital in critical condition. She broke down on me and my wife on our way to aamco, and we couldn't revive her like usual by shifting into 4 lo.

I am having this exact same problem.

Started in the parking lot at one of the ski areas, it was very cold. It would start and run in P or N but as soon as you put it in R or D, the engine would stall.

Towed it home, got it off the tow truck, started it up in N, put it in D and it died. Then I shifted into 4lo, put it in D and it kept running. So I put it back into 2hi and D and it was fine. Drove it around the culdesac and it was like nothing even happened. I thought maybe the cold affected the fluid or something since it was about 20 degrees warmer at my house.

Checked all the fluids this morning, everything seemed fine. ATF is full and no burning smell. No fluids leaking out of either diff or transfer case.

Drove it about 40 miles, pulled into a parking lot, same problem. Died in R or D, but runs in P or N. Started and stopped a few times, trying to keep the revs up and as I was getting on the freeway, the dash lit up, check engine, VSC Off and VSC Trac.

I was able to drive it home, used the reader and got P0770, Shift Solenoid E Malfunction.

Anyone figure this out? Do I just have to replace the solenoid or am I looking at a new tranny and torque converter?

Don't replace that solenoid E. I replaced that thing cleaned my filter the works, and it didnt help at all. Waste of money. Your looking at a rebuilt tranny. I took mine to aamco, and they helped me out. It cost about $2500. Actually the day that I was going to drive it to aamco it started acting up on me again, and I couldn't get it to drive again doing the 4lo thing so I called a tow. But yeah take it in as soon as possible or dont drive it. I believe I may have made things worse by putting it in 4lo.

sorry for the bad news
