Is it possible to remover roof rack on 2004 4Runner?

Greetings:

Is it possible to remove the roof rack (either completely or partially) on a 2004 4Runner v6 4x4 sport ed? If so, where can I find an instruction and will it risk to have a roof leak later on?

Advance thanks for your time and help.

Use the search feature above. I posted some info on that a while back, but I don't have the time to look for it. I swapped my silver one with a guy in cali for his black rack. Real easy. I'll check this thread when I have more time. Maybe I can save you some headache!

Try to find "rack roof 4th"

I just checked my HDD and have some pics, so I'll post them on this thread later.

Advance thanks for your time and help.

I did a search (key word "roof rack" and "roof rack 4th" and didn't find any procedure relevant to remove the roof rack (may be I manage to miss it since I am a bit sleepy right now). Once you get time please sent or post some pictures.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you so much jharris2 for your help. Unfortunately, the link doesn't work, I had an error message "Page not found...". I am wondering if this is the same link at 4runner.org forum?

Once again thank you much for your help.

First off, I apologize for being so late with this reply. It is easy to remove the roof rack. The end caps on the brackets just pop off. Be careful though as you may break a plastic clip. I used a knife to wedge underneath the cap between the bracket and the roof. Once removed, it's pretty easy to take off the rest.

Remove the cross members from the rack. You may want to label them as to which direction is forward. I think theres an arrow that points to the front. If installed wrong, they will make noise.

If you plan on keeping it off, you will need to fill the holes in the first and third picture below. You will also need a type of weather stripping to fill the channel. For adhering, I suggest using a 3M product like their Heavy Duty stuff in a spray can. Be careful not to use anything that would permanently adhere to the roof, in case you ever want to replace it.

Sorry for not being very descriptive but I am on my way to work and need to run but I thought I'd get some info and pics up for you.

Doug

02runner: Sorry for bothering you, especially when you are pretty busy.
Anyway.thank you so much for your attached picture and explanation. I will give it a try. It's pretty simple to remove. However, it's another story to fill up the mounting hole and the channel.

Jharris: thanks for your help.

You're right. The biggest problem about removing it and keeping it off is replacing the 1"+ weatherstrip to fill that void. If you genuinely want the rack gone, I'd measure the space exactly and try to find a replacement only for that open area that sat below the mounting brackets. Maybe you could look locally in maybe a hardware store or other specialty shop.

No worries on bothering people on this board, most of the members including me enjoy trying to help each other out. This board has saved me a ton of $$$ and headaches!

Cheers,

Doug M.
