Possible clutch problem on 93'?

my 93 p/u V6 has been shifting rough for a while and i already changed the rubber boot on the shifter so i thought it might be a clutch problem. so i took it to a shop and they said my rear main is leaking and that the the leaking motor oil may be getting on my clutch and destroying it. this clutch was put in no even a year ago. and they said the only way i could fix this would be to drop the tranny and fix the leak then put a new clutch in. does anyone know if this sounds like a possible problem or something else that could be causing this. i'm also worried that if this is the problem and i have to fix all that will my tranny also be screwed from this and need to be rebuilt soon.

If you main seal is bad, you need to drop the trans and take the clutch and flywheel off, and replace it. You might be able to clean up the clutch disk and pressure plate while your in there. If not, replace them.

how hard is it to fix the rear main? might be able to do it myself if not how much do you think a shop would charge for it?

Once the tranny is dropped it is not that hard. You will need a special tool, or something rigged to prevent the flywheel from turning when you take off the flywheel bolts. I think they are around 75ft.lbs or something. Once you pop off the flywheel it is easy.

Before you get to the flywheel, you will need to remove the clutch. If there is any oil on the clutch, I would replace it - which means you will need to resurface the flywheel too.

You know now that I think about it, I dont see why a leaky rear main seal would cause notchy shifting. Have you checked the plastic bushing that at the base of the shifter? Those have been known to disintegrate from time to time. That will not fix your leak, but it should take care of the "notchyness."
