possible 3rz-fe swap? need help
Ok so since my 3.slow died I am thinking of swapping in a 3rz-fe instead of just replacing the v-6. It has basically the same power characteristics, is cheaper, dohc, and an inline 4 is easier to turbocharge I have a few questions:Would it bolt in place or would I have to fabricate mounts?(I know the 5vz bolts in place so I kinda figure it would) Would it bolt up to my transmission(5-speed)? Is it taller than the 3.slow, I know the 3.4 is? Other than the engine and the computer what would I need? Also can I reuse any of the accesories from my 3.slow (ac, hoses, radiator, etc.)? Anything else I am forgetting that I'll need to consider? I'd appreciate some help asap because I have to make a decision quick whether to go with teh 3rz or the 3vz. Thanks for your help. Also putting a poll to see what people think I should do.

That's cool, but I'm just trying to figure this out so I can get a price estimate and see how it'll compare to putting in a 3.0 which will cost me about 2400 total. If I could do it for around that I'd be a happy man.

Yup. There's a lot to figure out. All the exhaust, fuel lines, etc are on the opposite side when comparing a 3RZ to a 22RE or 3VZE. Not impossible by any means but a lot of fabrication and rerouting to get it done.

There are some guys on the Pirate board that have done this swap. You would need the 2.7 bellhousing, and then switch exhaust, etc to the othe side of the Runner. This engine was used in the Hilux in other countries before it was put in the Tacoma/Runner here.

They've all done swaps where they swapped out a 22re for a 3rz. In otherwords a 4 cyl. to a 4cyl. not a 6cyl. to a 4 cyl.

Why not go with the 3.4? The tranny will bolt right up, and you won't have to do much modification. Plenty of power too. Don't just settle for the 3.slow.

And if you don't go with the 3.4, make sure that when you have your 3.0 rebuilt that you put it back together with Headers and a good exhaust. That'll give 'er some extra pep, better mileage, and you'll save money/time putting headers on this way (since you are taking the engine out/putting a rebuilt one in anyways) as opposed to doing it later which is more of a pain in the arse!

I think that by the time you'd finish this swap, you might have more that your $2400 into it and for what benefit? Sure it's easier to work on, it'll get you about 22-24 mpg with a manual tranny and it's reliable. If you want to do it, get a wrecked 4Runner or Taco with the accessories you want.
I think you could get most of these benefits from a well overhauled 3vz, over size valves from EngineBuilder, header, and a port and polish.
Now if you said you wanted a 1kzt swap, I'd have said go for it. Just do it with a half-cut.

I like that idea. It is a swap that has been done. The 3.4 is awesome (AToyota mechanics favorite to work on) and if you need more power, the get an s/c.
I vote for a 3.4 swap. I couldn't allow myself to spend $2400 on a 3.slow. (no offense, there is just a better option)
