poor acceleration under highway conditions

Under highway conditions (~ 50 mph) if I kick down the gas pedal the engine revs up, but the truck (a 4Runner 2000, SR5) does NOT speed up at all. I tried disconnecting the O/D, still nothing.

I went to the local dealer and he suggested to start checking the injectors, air filter, gas filter,
sparks, etc. But seems to me that he's only guessing.

Some idea?

Does the same thing happen if you kick it down to first gear, say, at 15 MPH and floor it?

If the engine revs and there's no additional go, then the tranny's slipping - and pretty bad from what it sounds like.

Check the tranny fluid, but I think your problems are deeper than that.

How many miles are on the truck? Are you the original owner? Where are you in the world?

Hi,
The truck has 70k miles. Actually this truck belongs to a friend of mine (he's using my account) and he's not the original owner (I think hes the third or fourth one). And we're at the other side of the world, in Chile, South America. So if I mispelled something, you know the reason...

Actually I said exactly the same to my friend, and show him how to check the transmision fluid (I belong a 2001 4Runner limited), but I'm not an expert.

Ahhh... Chile's going to be a bit hard for one of us to get to and help ya' out first hand. bummer.

If this is happening at 70k, it sounds like someone has been beating on the truck pretty bad. I'm at 150k and I'm slipping in the 1st-2nd shift, but only when I jump on it hard, and I'm S/C'd.

The tranny fluid will be the first place to look, a good drain & flush MIGHT help, but this really doesn't sound like an easy fix. When you check the fluid level, see if you can get a picture of it on the dipstick and another of it's color (wipe it on a white paper towel) and post it up. The color will tell us some, and if you can get a shot of it in a "puddle" it may show more (like, metal bits floating... ewww).

One big recommendation will be to STOP kicking it down or doing jack-rabbit starts. Each time it slips, it's only making things worse.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys.
Tomorrow, or over the weekend we will try this. By the way, I just tested my truck and it is just fine, just as fast as always.
As soon as I take the pictures I'll post them.

It's an auto (see the O/D part above)

Unless of course you mean clutch pack.

Fixed!!

Hi,

sorry about the delay, but asap the trucks were ok, we went to the beach to test them (at least that's the official explanation to Pedro's wife)
Finally the problem was traced to a faulty MAF sensor, and to have under the minimum level the A/T fluid!!! :pat:

He did an A/T flush, and the toyota dealer cleaned the sensor, and the truck was as fast as always.
Anyway I recomended to my friend to install the same TRD transmision cooler as my truck has.

Thanks for all the help and advices.

Best Regards,
Cristian (dinochile)
