PLEASE HELP, 4x4 trouble....

ive got a 87 p/u

last night i went to use 4x4 in the snow, i locked both hubs before i went off driving because its was snowing...i noticed a rubbing sound that was in sink with the tire rotation, the faster i went, the quicker the noise went around, the slower i went, the slower the noise came...the sound is something like when there is a high spot and it rubs against something everytime it goes around...i took the tire off and turned the wheel with my hand and noticed the sound "seems" like its coming from behing the rotor ,where the bar from the 4x4 comes into it...and the noise is only on the driver side...it happens more when its not in 4x4(with hubs locked), and less of a noise when 4x4 is in use(with hubs locked)...NO NOISE WHEN HUBS ARE FREE AND NO NOISE WHEN HUBS ARE unlocked AND vehicle IN 4X4

nope, if you have you hubs unlocked then the CV joints dont move at all. When you lock the hubs you lock the wheel to the axle. So when unlocked the spinning of the wheel has no effect on the cv joints. How do your CV boots look, is there grease and chit all over your a-arms?

Does it only happen in cold weather, or any weather? Does the sound go away after a while, or there all the time?

there was no grease on my boots or a-arms today...i took it upon myself to pull them back earlier and look inside, i dont really know what to look for so all i could tell you that i noticed was grease...as far as the weather issue not sure since i havnet used it in warm wheather recently...and as far as the noise going away, i didnt want to push my luck making it worse since i didnt know what it was...

I have the same problem on my 4r, asked my old man who is a toyota tech and he said that it was probably the brass fitting that the axle goes through. He said that on some yotas (and specifically 2nd gen 4r) the brass fitting that the axle goes through has a design flaw (something along the lines of there not being spiral grooves to distribute grease evenly) that manifests itself in cold weather due to the fact that the grease is thicker. When mine does it, it is only on really cold mornings (which there seem to be a lot of lately) and it only does it for about 1/4 mile, but it is REALLY loud and scared the ˟˟˟˟ out of me the first time i heard it. He said that it is repairable but you basically have to tear apart the entire front end apart to do it. He told me (and im not entirely sure that i believe him) that it isnt doing any real damage, and just to live with it till it gets warmer, cuz the repair is really expensive ($400-$600) employee cost. Not sure if this is the same problem as you, but it sounds like it might be. There is a chance that it is also a wheel bearing that needs to be repacked or something like that, but i am not sure how that would work on a truck with manual hubs. Hope this helps.
