Unhappy Please help, 4wd problem

I have a 93 v6 4x4. Everything runs fine in 2wd but I put it in 4wd last night and there were some major problems. There was this loud thunking noise and you could also feel it. It got worse when I turned, either direction and got louder the faster I went. I only went about 5-10 mph. When shifting from 1st to 2nd was difficult and one time it stalled. I was on pavement and was just checking it out to see if it worked. I don't know that much about trucks and any help would be appreciated.

That truck has part-time 4 Wheel drive, Which means that when you engage the 4 wheel drive, there is no differentation between the front and the rear axles. If you have the owners manual it will explain this.

You don't want to engage the 4 wheel drive on dry pavement, you will get severe binding in the driveline, and can even break parts.

You only want to use the 4 wheel drive on your truck in slippery conditions, that way the tires can slip, and relieve the binding in the driveline.

I second what 02SE said, but I also must ask, have you put your rig into 4wd on a regular basis to make sure driveline components in your front axle/transfer case, etc, stay lubed up? You should do this for a few clicks each month for this very reason - in a place where your tires have some slip, or only in a straight line if you're on dry pavement.

I just got the truck a week ago so I don't know how regularly it was put in 4wd. It makes the noise even when I am in a straight line. It sounds like a broken axle and the whole truck shakes. I put it on jack stands and looked at everything and it seemed ok. the end oposite the cv joint boot where it connects to the diff has a very small amount of play. Is that normal? I also checked how it acted in 2wd and 4wd. IN 2wd the drive shafts spins freely and the wheels spin freely. In 4wd the drive shaft doesn't move and the wheels spin in oposite directions. When spinning the wheels in 4wd I don't hear any noise. Thanks for any help you might have.

probably a good time to pick up a hayes/chiltons manual and give the front hubs a tear down/regrease job. one banana job, dont have to take the wheels off! as mentioned above, you should run your rig in 4x at least once a month to keep things lubed up and operating smoothly.

could be the transfer case. Take it to a 4-wheel specialist and see what they can diagnose.
