Planet Kaizen says Diesel pickups may come to the US!!
Hope this isn't a repost...
So I was poking around on Toyota's website for more pictures and info on the new FJ, when I ran across Planet Kaizen's report on the latest SEMA show.

I hit the steering wheel at the bottom of the web page (The one that pops up the Explore button) and then clicked on the tab that says "Questions from Out There". This brings up some questions that people have been asking Toyota.
Aaron D from Zillah, WA. asked why Toyota doesn't sell a pickup truck with the Hilux diesel in the USA... and the response was:
"There is no reason that Toyota couldn't sell a diesel powered small truck in the US. ... A diesel engine for the next generation Tundra may be considered for the US market..."

Yes, but with diesel still running around $3/gallon, I don't see the main U.S. consumer market going gaga for diesels anytime soon.

When a full size 3/4 ton quad cab long bed 4x4 Dodge with a Cummins gets 19 to 22 mpg I can only imagine what a Toyota might get with a turbodiesel. I'd buy one if CARB would approve it! Oh yeah, 300hp and 700 ft.lbs. of torque is nice too! I think I read a post somewhere about someone's frustration that a Cummins from a Dodge would squash one of our trucks. So much for that swap.

Toyota is supposed to be doing a V8 turbo diesel and a V8 hybrid in the new Tundra's which are supposed to come out at the end of next year as a 2007 model. It is supposed to be bigger than Ford, Dodge or even the new GM trucks. I can't wait.

Think diesel has to come back inline (fuel costs) for this to happen. During my last fill-up (a week or so ago), 87 octane was 2.50$/gal vs diesel at 3.50$/gal.
I thought one of the benefits of diesel was less energy used during refining processes (than unleaded gas)? Maybe its simply supply and demand.

Diesels can also convert to biodiesel very easily too which can be much cheaper than $3.50 a gal (likely cheaper than $2.50 too) and the gas mileage is much better on average......can't do that with an otto cylce motor.

I hope they offer the FTX with diesel... I think that's what they're considering..
I know, it's a big truck and wouldn't carry the same off-roading flavor that most of us know. But it would be damaging in a competition against other full sized vehicles.
Look at the "wheels-on-corners" design. No need to bob that bed!

Wow...
...I would take a very close look at that concept truck, if offered with a diesel & maybe a 5-speed.
Along with Toyota quality, that just might be enough to make me consider retiring my '89 (maybe).
As long as I'm making wishes, I wish Toyota would reverse course and again offer a mini-truck, in addition to the now mid-size Tacoma.
And, how about a turbo-diesel option for ALL of their trucks?
That would really make my head spin.

that truck is one seriously ugly POS.
i'm not going to give a damn about toyota diesels until they offer one in a compact truck with a manual tranny. then again, it's not gonna happen.

okay, this is just a rumor that I somehow got out of my mechanic at my local Toyota Dealership (I'm still under warranty, that's why I go there)...
The dealership that I go to, just bought more land next to them, because they have to build another lot. The lot is going to be for the heavy duty truck market. Like someone above mentioned, Toyota will be sending over competitors for the F-250, F-350, et al. He said Toyota wasn't really telling the dealership much, but they wanted the lot to be plenty big, and to expect to advertise to all of the construction and contractor guys down here.

Why do you need diesel V8's?
My engine is a 4 cylinder 3.0TD with 125HP, a 11 years engine. Now the Prado and the Hilux have a 3.0 Turbo diesel intercooled with 166HP and can be setted up to 196 easily...
Want more engine? Look at the HDJ-100 engine (Diesel version of the UZJ-100), 4.2 TD Intercooler, 205HP and more torque than the 4.7 gas...
I dont wanna offend you, but you're used to american diesels, which are big, too much big and not well-spent.

Diesel V8, so that Americans will buy it. We are power-crazed.
Toyota still has to do something to convince the American cowboy that there is a reason to buy the Toyota rather than another Dodge, or Ford, or Chevy. It looks like they're going to pull out the power card.
I'm not sure what all of these American 1 ton trucks have, but my friend's '96 1 ton 4x4 Dodge has a V6 Diesel... gets around 20 mpg (I think).

Granted, that is plenty big... but why not go bigger?
