those fender flare extensions you guys are talking about, are those for the limited/sport style flares? i took my running boards off long ago, and have sliders now, and figure some extensions or mud flaps would be a good idea.

and i'm gonna have to disagree with you jason, it doens't look like there's something missing without running boards. it looks 10, no...100 times better.

Fender flare extensions...

I am talking about the factory fender flares on the front where you take off the running boards and that front end cap so it comes up short on the side of the front fender closest to the door, the fender flare extension...mudflap...which looks just like the black ones, goes there. Keeps rocks and junk off your rocker panels. The stealership has them for about $20/each plus tax. I just got a pair today!

I am seriously considering taking mine off to...I just dunno about the whole protection thing. I live on a dirt road, and my "driveway" is gravel so that may cause a serious problem. I will check into those fender flare extensions...you say they are 20/ea. from the stealer? If thats the case I will just go to AutoZone and get their mudflaps that say 4x4 on them for like $9.95 and be done with it. We'll see.

But that rig looks awesome!

Stealership fender flare mudflaps...

It is OEM equipment, makes the front match the back, and it is three screws a side. No muss, no fuss, exact perfect match and fit and takes about 2 minutes to do. I'm going to take all mine off while I'm doing my lift and Forever Black them all real good!!

Sounds like a plan man - I look forward to the pics. If your are doing the deckplate mod, plan on a few hours because you must get every single piece of plastic off that box. Also, I read to use silicone that is not harmful to the air flow sensor.

Sensor safe silicone?

Where do I find such stuff? I've read about that it was needed for the deck plate mod, but nobody seems to know where to get any?

Most any auto parts store will sell sensor safe silicone. It will probably be in the same aisle where the RTV gasket stuff is. It will say right on the packaging "Sensor Safe" so you'll know for sure.

I discovered I was supposed to use special silicone after I had done the mod, but so far I haven't had any problems. I didn't use a lot of silicone anyway because the deck plate fit really snug and I'm not planning on driving the truck into any water that deep.

I'd assume that any auto parts store would have the right sealant. Maybe there is something other than silicone that would work.

Kind of funny, I have a friend whose name is Cilla Kohn

hope this helps

Thanks guys!

I will get out some pics this weekend of the before and after because as of Monday afternoon my rig will never look the same. I'm doing the lift Saturday and the new rims and tires Monday. I have a bunch of other stuff coming this weekend too, so I am going to be busy moddin my rig. It will be fun.

I'll get you the mudflap pics by tomorrow night.

I like the look with steps or sliders. The bare truck looks like it's higher off the ground, which makes it look better but the whole rock/debris damage is a big issue for me- since the lowers are painted plastic.

Maybe that clear, plastic protection sticker would be a good addition if you take off the steps.

I'll take my steps off when I get some sliders. There are some cool sliders in the tech area (i think). Corey also has it on his site.

here's someone with the bars

i love the look of my 4runner from that angle when the running boards are off. however, when i stand from the side, its so ugly, because you can parts of the suspension and whatever that big thing is under the cab...dont know what it is, has a shield underneith it, 2nd gen. i dont know about the other gen's but I keep mine on.

That is exactly how I feel, I love the look from certain angles just not head on from the side.

I am going to my local parts store today and will inquire about some mudflaps. We'll see what they say...

Hey Brian,

How about those pics, I'm in the same situation and I am curious about the fender extensions(mud flaps) you are talking about. The ones at the dealership around here are ~$60 each.
Thanks,
Chris
