perma-cool vs. TRD tranny cooler
I'm about due for the 60,000 mile tune and thought it would be a good idea to have a transmission cooler installed. Every S/C guru on this board recommends it at least.
My question is should I pony up for a TRD? I don't race, hardly ever tow or go off-road (:chicken.
Seems like the medium duty perma-cool from Performance Products might be the way to go. For $40 bucks, seems like a deal compared to over $200 for the TRD.
Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated.

With the TRD tranny cooler, you're paying $150+ for a fancy mounting bracket.
The Perma-cool style I believe is the tube and fin type, OK but not the best.
They way to go is to order a Hayden Transaver Plus stacked plate style cooler. Its rumored that Hayden manufactures the TRD coolers anyway, just not sure if that's confirmed.
I ordered one from Makco Distributing and just installed it this past saturday. I went with model 1678, heavy duty.

Hayden, stack plate, I have the 30k cooler installed http://www.dcflags.com/MM001.ASP?pageno=84 After talking to Hayden, Level 10 and Amsoil, I found that it's pretty hard to over-cool ATF, particularly Synthetic ATF. You want the coolest possible AFT returning to the A/T. Easy install. One tip, go find some 3/8 ATF hose, and make sure it's ATF rated. The 11/32 that ships with the Hayden is REAL tough to get on the Toyota 3/8 fittings...save yourself a busted knuckle or two!
Measure the available areas on your truck to see which size will work for you. I ended up mounting mine upside down to clear the hood latch! Made for a long hose run!

The cheeper one should be fine, i you really think you need one. The temp in the high country is usually under 80 but I guess the traffic on King Street can make any tranny hot.

I agree with mertztr & tomstin. I also bought mine at http://www.dcflags.com/MM001.ASP?pageno=84
I also have the 30,000 lb. cooler model #DC1679...$51.91
They shipped very fast and install was pretty easy. I followed the write-up from the tech section. You can't beat the price and quality.
I have a ton of TRD items on my Runner, but the trans cooler is waaay over priced. They charge upwards of $200 for what is actually a Hayden cooler that still isn't as big as my $51 Hayden cooler from the site above. It was a tough decision for me. Spend $200 and get a cool looking TRD box or save $150 and get an even better one....Hmmmmm. The stacked plate coolers are the way to go. The one from PP isn't as good. I went with the biggest I could get with living in Phoenix and having a s/c. I figure it doesn't hurt.

I'm convinced, Hayden it is.
Hey PFDAXE - your runner is one, if not, my favorite on the board. FWIW - cool truck!
Hyperlite - I remember. Congrats on the cool lake living. Do you know Jeff Gordon or Dale Jarret??

Thanks mgspann:
I don't think you can go wrong with the Hayden and can't overkill with purchasing a cooler. Your tranny will love you for it. Be sure to read the install write up as this helped alot.

Let us know how the install goes. Remember to add more fluid as you'll need some extra.
