Well what do you know. Summer has just started to kick in when my A/C goes out!!

Actually I wasn't driving, it was my dad that was. I had loaned him my truck for a quick trip and at point of arrival the A/C starts to get hot and notices a strange smell coming from the hood--burning type smell. Well, he quickly pulled over, popped the hood open and smoke was coming out from the engine...........

Right away he knew it was the A/C so he let the smoke go down and turned that sucker off and everything was back to normal.

I live in PHOENIX so I have to get this done quickly!

Any advice or tips before I shove it to the shop??

I also would like to mention that one side of my truck is higher than the other!

It all happened when I went to my cabin about two weeks ago. I figured I'd do some trail riding while I was there and I was just messing around, checking out my suspension travel. Well when I got back to my cabin (Actually, it was the next day), I noticed my back left side higher than the back right side.

The diffrence is about a 2 inches, but it's noticeable.

Can anyone help me out on this as well??

What kind of truck? what year? Where was the smoke coming from? What kind of burning smell (plastic, electrical, belts etc)? Any noises?

As for your tilting...which way did you flex it? Did you flex it the same way it's tilted now? Any modifications? Any noises when you flexed it? The type of truck will really help here.

We need some more info.

You seem interested.

It's a 1994 TOYOTA PICK-UP TRUCK.

The smoke was coming from the belt system.

The smell was belt-like.

I flexed it many times, both sides.

No mods. No noises.

For the A/C:
Check/replace all the belts. While you're at it, check the A/C clutch. If it's seized, it will need to be replaced. If you pay someone, prepare to shell out some dough.

For the tilt:
Did you overstress or break a rear leaf? You may have to replace are re-arch the rear leaf springs. Which way is it leaning? Towards the side and back? If so, I'd bet money you comprimised a spring.

How does a broken leaf spring look??

I took a pretty close look on both side, and I didn't catch anything.

The truck is not leaning to the side nor the back. One side is lower (Or higher) than the other. Just picture it with a flat tire or something.

It's like this: The gap from the top of the tire (left side) to the wheel well is about an inch and a half more than the right side.

I don't have my truck right now or else I'd take some pictures.

Get a tape measure and measure the distance from your rim to your body Front Left, FR, Rear Left, RR.

While you're at it, crawl under and do a visual inspection of the rear leafs. The arch of the rear leaf spring pack should be symetrical from left to right.

If you're lucky, you'll just need to adjust your torsion bars up front.

If not, a new set of leaf springs.

If you've really been a bad boy, you have a crack in the frame.

Like I said before, I took a pretty close look at the leaf and they're fine. I don't think I am stupid enough to miss a broken leaf.

So, when you say that I may need to adjust my torsion bars, you're saying that they can get them unadjusted by going off-roading??

It was fine before I went up there, it was AFTER I came back............

After I took that 20 mile trial drive in which I was testing out my suspension travel. Nothing crazy, just the abnormal. Everytime there was some sort of dip or something I would just drive over it and stop as soon as my back wheels would lower adjusting to the ground.


So when I got back, it was the next day which I noticed one side (RIGHT-back) higher than the other side (LEFT-back).

Torsion bars are up front. Since you say it is the rear that is lowered it couldn't be the rear.

Sounds like you're going to spend Memorial day weekend taking off your rear leaf springs so you can set them side by side for comparison.

Priorities!!

You might also want to check out your rear shackles, could be you some how got on side to stick "up". Compare both sides when you are feeling better after partying (College Grad hopefully )

LOL.... Nah, High School graduate only, but hey, first generation to ever graduate!

Anyways, yeah, I'm about 99% sure that it's going to be the shackles. I checked them, and one is standing upward more than the other.......

What do I do in this case??

Jack it up, unbolt the shackle, re-position it and bolt it in again.

Should be easy...Unless it's rusted together.

Unless you've figured out what you did to cause the shackle to reverse, and stop doing it, it'll happen again.

I used to treat my little 2wd Toy pickup pretty rough, but never had the shackles flip on me.
