parking brake handle pulled loose...

last night as i was parking to go for dinner. i took a quick look underneath and couldnt see much. it sounded like maybe the lug at the end of the cable attached to the handle broke. the mechanism under the front passenger side looks intact so im thinking it may be under the dash where the problem is.

the parking brake indicator light is still on, i managed to get the handle wiggled back into place. i guess its not contacting the switch to shut off the light. im going to go poke around and see what im up against, any suggestions or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

thanks,

lee

just an update for anyone doing a parking brake cable replacement. install a body lift first! there isnt a lot of room between the firewall and assorted other parts on the drivers side to get at the folding clips that hold the cable in place. once you get the cable routed through there, the rest is pretty simple. you have to be a bit of a contortionist to get under the dash to release the pauls for the 2nd gen handle to allow the handle to travel enough to release the barrel end. oh, and wait several hours after driving to do this, the transmission holds heat for a long time! the rear cables look straight forward enough, you have to drop the gas tank to get at a clip on the passenger side. the body lift will give you some room to reach into the tight areas.
