Parking brake adjustment problem - only engages one side

Hi guys. Got another problem here... this time with my parking brake.. and this is a 1998 4runner, 3.4 btw

So how exactly do you adjust this thing? It seems like it's working perfectly on the driver side, but does almost nothing on the passenger side..

Looking at the lever inside the braking component area, for some reason it doesn't sit at the base position on the pass side, it sits near the middle.. and even when I remove the cable from it, and try to PUSH it back to the base position, it doesn't budge. When the hand brake is pulled it only moves a few mm at the most.

What do I do here? Here's some pics..

Driver side which appears to function perfectly:

Bracket thing that might need adjustment?? :

Use the FSM link in my sig and grab a manual....it will have the steps and specs for adjusting.

Also, the bellcrank can freeze up due to rust and gunk. There are threads around here on the topic.

Okay thanks. Is the component perhaps faulty though on the one side? Seeing as it is unable to return to the base position..

Correct. Only one side may be frozen especially if you are located in the salt belt. Take a look under there and see if you can move the bellcrank by hand.

Type bellcrank repair into google and find the link to:
Toyota Truck Park Brake Bellcrank Repair on www.tundrasolutions.com

It is a good tutorial.

Okay, so neither lever is stuck or frozen. Upon detaching the parking brake cable from the problem side I realized I actually had to pull it in order to get it attached, so there's not enough slack on the cable there...

I tried to adjust it using the little bolt adjust next to the actual park brake handle inside... but it only seems to affect the driver side.

So all I can think to do now is adjust the bracket thing I linked a picture of in my original post (img 1726)... would this be an acceptable adjustment, or would that throw off other things?

Red face

The center pivot needs to be able to move freely .

If it got seized up from not being used it needs to be freed up.

If you look you can see bushings that allow it to move as needed .

Your brake cable could be seized on that side as well.

So I took apart and greased the center pivot... yet it really only moves slightly now, and I'm getting a bit better pull on the bad side here... but still not nearly what I'm getting on the driver side.. both bellcranks seem to be able to move through their full travel.. so don't think them being frozen or stuck is the issue.

I just can't get both bellcrank levers to move equally... what else can I try?

the bell crank cable attaches to the lever on the brake shoes

Tell me that cable was just off for the picture and not missing altogether. If you are missing the cable it would explain your problem.

Yup, it was just off for the picture. I had a mechanic friend over to look at it, and he just suggested that due to the drum being off and the axle sagging due to the body being suspended... that the driver side had too much travel to be able to pull the opposite side... yet I have everything back together now, and when I was driving it... I could only get minor stoppage with the lever pulled at maximum. Not even enough to stop the idle roll...

Your E-brake pull handle is adjusted to the proper number of clicks?

I'm afraid that you will have to pull the bell crank out and clean it up on the bench. Those two bolts hold it in place. Remove the springs from the back side and pull it off. Pull the pivot pin and grind out any rust. And repaint it. I use marine grease on the pivot pin so it won't corrode again and the grease will stay put even when submerged in water.

Check the cable bracket on the axle housing (pic 1726). It should be able to swing left and right. Hit it with WD40 if its seized and get it moving again. It balances the force applied to both bell cranks.
