i was thinking about painting my grille black. any opinions on this look?

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday....its the only chrome piece on my truck and i want it black....i think its a great look

Man doing that with paint is a real pain in the ass! If you sand the chrome paint off of that plastic, the balck paint still chips off with bugs! If you sand blast it and take it to a body shop where they can use plastic adhesion promoter, tough primer, 3 coats of black chasis paint to withstand bugs, then clear coat the crap out of it maybe it would work. Or you could just do this:



I did all of thise things mentioned above except taking it to the body shop. Well I am in the paint program in my college and did it there, but I am not counting that. But what I finally did to that damn grille is I sanded it down once more, and took it to my friendly ameriguard sprayer. After about 2 minutes of getting the material ready to spray, it took about 30 seconds and BAM! All sealed up and will never come off or chip, or fade...

Very easy, sand down the grill and paint it with adhesion promoter thanb paint with PLASTIC primer and PLASTIC paint.

5-spd for life!

Did it already. Use 400 grit sandpaper with Dup-li color adheasion promoter. Krylon fusion etched primer with krylon fusion flat black paint. Coated with 3 coats of clear. Still chipped after a week.

Was the paint specifically for PLASTIC? Cause I have rustoleum plastic paint I used on my snorkel i made and it wont flake, chip or come off that ABS piping and I did exactly what I said.
You also need to stick to 1 brand period for paints, they dont mix to well dude.

i'm going to do my satoshi grille again, but this time paint the chrome flat black with everything else but the "toyota". i've used a product called Bulldog adhesion promoter that has worked great so far for other projects, we'll see about this one with all the rocks, bugs, and debris hitting it. i also like the krylon fusion products.

I painted my grill with black rustoleum for metal, and I haven't even had one chip! Its been about 2 years now too.

if its chrome, needs to be sanded with 150 grit, primed with etch or epoxy and then sanded with 400 and painted.
chrome is very hard and needs to be sanded very well to get anything to stick to it. no adhesion promoter is needed unless you are painted bare plastic.

i'm going to get that done this weekend. also, one of the brackets on my running boards broke so those are coming off too. i'll post some pics once i'm done

I was just looking at my truck the other day and I want to do this paint job as well. But I have one question....

Ok, I have a black 4Runner, so I would say a black grill. No brainer there... But the plastic on my front bumper is a dark gray. Is that from fading, or were they never truely black? Should I match the grill to the black truck, or the dark gray bumper?

I'm sure I'll do it black to match the truck, but I just wanted to hear you guys tell me to.
