Painting Bumpers
How would i prepare the bumpers for paint? What grit sand paper should i use to sand the bumpers? I plan on going with the black theme for my t4r. Also what paint would you recommend? Thanks

I think the difference is that bamachem's were the plastic type and this guy's look like chrome.
Just sand down to rough up the chrome, like 400 grit, primer, paint, clear. Use the OEM color paint to match. Automotive products will work best.
Bamachem painted mine, I did the prep.

I've painted my front bumper black, and that chrome is a huge PITA to sand. And the paint doesn't want to stick to it, so make SURE you sand it down really really well.

I had the color keyed bumpers that were getting all chipped and scratched up. Decided to get them line-x coated. Took them off, brought them in, and had them prepped and sprayed for $60 cash. Pics in the link.

Greedy, that looks awesome man! Never seen that before, did you get your rear bumper done too? Good work!

This was what she looked like when she left me...
you won't find a better looking 3rd gen anywhere...and the front and rear bumpers were both painted. A local guy bought it from me and I see it all the time, still looks great. Bamachem did a super job.

Man Brian, I am shocked at how similar our 3rd gens look...its crazy! Only difference I can see from those pics are the tires and mine has a scoop...weird, for some reason I thought yours was a limited with the limited flares.
I have pics in my profile in the YT community if you wanna see how similar they are!
I remember that your rig was my first, and still is my favorite 3rd gen! We both have good taste, hehe

it began life as a 00 SR5 4x4 with chrome bumpers & grill and 15" wheels wearing 28" tires. i painted the bumpers for him just before he sold it and swapped wheels/tires w/ him. that grill is from an 02 black sport.

Yeah I noticed the grill, it was a must with the black pearl emblems...I ran into that problem too.

I'd never thought of getting a LineX spray on my chipped-to-hell front bumper (01 Tacoma 4x4).
Did you do anything to prepare it, such as sanding? Or could I just unbolt it, and take it in to be sprayed? It has no dents, but is a combination of ABS and painted metal. Would they be able to mask off the plastic parts and just LineX the metal?

Don't know what year you have, but on my 3rd gen, all the plastic parts come off of the metal bumper parts. If you look closley and some of the "before" pictures of the dissassembled bumpers, you can see that it is just the metal parts. the line-x guy sprayed the the bumpers and then i reassembled the plastic parts right over the now line-xed metal bumper. If you have this done, just make sure you put some plugs in the holes that are used to put the bumper back together as the line-x is pretty thick and can completley fill in the smaller holes used for attaching the plastic pieces.
Edit: Just saw that you have a 01 taco. I think the same procedure would work as I imagine the bumpers are put together the same way. I didn't do any prepping to my bumpers prior to the line-x but I also had the color keyed bumpers, not chrome. I don't know how well the stuff adheres to chrome but I imagine you will need to do some sanding..

greedy, i just bought on 02 4runner sport and its got the same problem with chips in the bumper. With my last 99 runner, i sanded down the bumper myself and lined it with rhinoliner and it looked great, but this time around my runner is thunder cloud metallic in color and i can't match the color, but linx guys said they could. They said the job would be a little more because of the color and off hand without seeing it said a price of $350, and they said they would pull of the bumper themselves and do everything, what do you think would be a fair price? should i pull the bumpers off myself (is it the same procedure as for the 99's and do you have a procedure guide for it?...how long how much work was it for you?) thanks for the help
