Paint clear coat peeling. What to do?

My truck is old and spent most of its life under the unrelenting Texas sun. The paint has taken a beating. I've taken care of it as best I could but I think the damage was done long before I got it.

The clear coat at the edge of the hood near the wipers is peeling off. It's slow but constant.

There are also patches that my sister refers to as paint leprosy. It's like the clear coat is gone or getting hazy. It doesn't peel but looks like it did.

Is this paint job too far gone or are there products or methods to get this back?
Any direction would be awesome.

some might say you can reclear it but best thing to do is strip down to bare metal and start over. If not it will just come back. I just had this same problem. If your gonna do the work, just do it the right way and take it down.

Sorry, no pics. My camera STB a couple of months ago. I rarely use it so it's not a priority to get a new one. Sorry.

I was hoping you weren't going to say "new paint job" but I had a feeling you were.

Thanks for the help.

I have some peeling clear coat as well. not terrible tho. I just keep some wax on it to help prolong the inevitable. I am planning a paint job soon, partially because of the peeling clear coat and partly just because I want too.... lol

Yeah, the wax does seem to slow it down. Thanks.

You probably don't have to take it all the way down to metal but you definitely have to sand back the bad peeling spots, prime the whole hood, block sand it, then shoot more color and clear. If the clear isn't adhering anymore then it would probably be best to sand it all off and then go to primer, blocking, color and clear.

Is it the original paint? My Runner has seen about 3 different paint jobs, only 1 from me. But my buddy in HS didn't nearly sand as good as he should have. So far I have put about 20 hours of sanding and still have more work to do. This time around I shouldn't have any peeling. From your description it seems like you cannot avoid what is coming. Maybe you should start sanding and make friends with a good painter....

On my hood and the fenders all the clear is gone along with the top of 1 back door. If you look in the sun it's seems to be a different color then the rest, so I assume its been wrecked and reprinted. Must have been crappy clear coat since Its gone. will post pics tomorrow once the sun is out! My has some chips and scratches on the rest of the car. How much would it be to re paint the whole thing? I have rust on the front fenders and have sports hood that needs paint. Should I just get those 2 painted or do the whole thing so it matches? Also anybody know a good painter in Denver or CO?

I have seen people rough it up and clear over it. Usually people or fly by night dealers that are trying to make it look good to sell though.

Looks good at first but, doesn't last.

Must be about that time...clear coat is going on the hood of one of ours too. I'm waxing it now, but it's only a matter of time until...

It seems I'm not the only one with this problem. Misery loves company. To be honest, I don't feel it is worth the effort to sand and repaint. I love this truck but it is what it is and that ain't a whole lot. It's a great ride that gets me around. You know you love a truck when you know you'll keep it when you get a new one. Hell this thing is paid for, gets good gas mileage, and insures for <$25 a month. Only an idiot would sell it.

My advice is admire your truck from afar, then you won't see the small chips and missing clear coat.
