P0500

My instrument cluster all of a sudden quit working. Checked the fuse and sure enough it was blown. I replaced it and go my merry way. Today, the same problem. Now I have a check engine light and according to the scan gauge I've got a P0500 code (VSS). Being mechanically inclined, I know I'm searching for the problem for a short to ground and not the code itself. Have any of you had any problems? Every time I get to looking at it at work I'm called for another vehicle to work on. I did not find any burned, frayed or open wires in my initial checks, but if I ever get time I will track more wirings.

Dang I forgot all about posting this thread. Well to update it anyways... it was not exactly a fault. One of our driveability techs decided to pull a hair pulling prank on me by putting a fixed resistor and complicated wirings and so forth to blow the fuse slowly when the current went above the 10A limit. I'll get him back though...

Nice prank, I like the ones that take more than average thought and time!! Reminds me of the prank the fitters did at my last job. They wired up the horn to the brake lights on someones rig. He gets to the end of the driveway at work and brakes before pulling out on the main road and of course the horn starts blowing! So you can imagine what happens next as he realizes whats happened and tries to not brake and not blow the horn..... we laughed for hours...
