Hi all,

I feel a bit embarassed asking this question, but I just can't seem to pin down an answer. Seems like it would be easy.......

I'm looking to buy an old 4Runner for off-roading and taking my family camping. I'm thinking probably first generation, possibly second gen. I want it cheap and for it to be ugly is kinda a plus as I won't have to worry if I slide into a tree or ding the body on a rock. Not that I'm looking for ugly, just that pretty is not a priority.

My main question is, what are the year-to-year differences? Like, what year did the second-generation come out? What year was the solid front axle offered? What year was fuel injection introduced? What other important differences? Motors?

I'd also like to hear about any problems that I should be looking for.

Of course, it might just be easiest to link me to a site with this info - I've just had a hard time finding one.

Cool, thanks. That is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I was having a hard time sorting out what was what.

edit: oh, one other question. Did they change the wheelbase when they introduced the 2nd generation? Short is good!

As far as problems, the only major one is the infamous head gasket on the V6. It is a TSB and the dealer will replace it at no charge. Give the dealer the VIN before you buy to find out if it has been replaced.

I believe the wheelbase was lengthened for the 4 doors but if you get lucky, you may find a rare 2 door 2nd Gen.

You all forgot to mention timing chain guides. With the 4cyl 22re they have plastic timing chain guides which wear out and can cause serious engine damage if not inspected regularly. I wish someone would have told me this when I first got my 4runner.

the problems i encountered
with my 1st gen
22re Chain guides (plastic = Bad)
rebuilt engine (over tightened exhaust studs pulling out = Exhaust leaks)
(not alot of aftermarket exhausts available)
(auto locking hubs suck!)
most mechanics do not like working on interference engines

but they are great trucks!

I was pretty much set on a 1st generation - I like the removable top and was very interested in the solid front axle (see my post in the off-road section) but I guess it's a moot point now. The Mrs. and I went out looking at a couple trucks this A.M and she's decided we MUST have 2nd gen. Comfort, style, refinement.....all that chick stuff. She tried to use the "for the baby" thing, but I shot that down. That kid is ALL boy and would probably prefer a real rough-n-ready truck - he certainly prefers my rattling bumpy old lowered CRX to my new Subaru WRX.....but anyway, then she said "well I want it and I have to ride in it and I make as much $ as you do...and I....and I........" and she's as stubborn as a mule so 2nd gen it is!

I'll let y'all know when I buy something. Hopefully within the month if I find the right truck.
