Oil pan gasket
How hard is it to replace the oil pan gasket? I was looking at doing it on my truck but it seems that a)you have to pull the engine or b)drop the front diff. Anybody got any tips?
Its a 93 4runner SR5 with 88000 miles on it.

It's gonna be a tough thing to replace. The diff in front is in the way. So you'll have to lift the engine quite a bit or drop the diff. I'll lokk for some more info and get back to ya.

yeah its gonna be ugly. Dropping the diff is the easiest(sic) way to do it. How bad is it dripping. You could always undo the pan and let it down as much as possible the use gasket maker of the proper type on it. I don't envy you having to do this job.

That's what I was thinking, there probably is no gasket.
Are you sure absolutely sure it's leaking from there?
Maybe try washing the engine with that gunk engine cleaner and a stiff brush, and verifying that's where the leak is coming from.
If you're at 88K miles, have you changed the timing belt? If not, maybe change the belt, and replace the front main, oil pump and camshaft oil seals while you're at it, maybe that'll help.

According to my mechanic, there is a gasket and it is supposedly a pain to get to it. I have a leak in the same place and it's supposed to cost about $350 to work on it.

I think that the guys are right. After 91 they stopped using gaskets on the oil pans. There is unfortunatley no easy way to solve this unless you drop the diff or take it to a shop. The FIPG is what I was refering to before. Vey good product. Use it sparingly if you do it yourself.
