oil leak

Hey guys, I walked outside this morning and I was messing with something a noticed a little bit of oil under the truck and it was fresh, so I looked under and it was all over the front diff. So when i got under the truck i noticed it wasnt the diff but it looked like its leaking from the rear bellhousing or above where I cant see. It doesnt smell like gear oil either. Im due for a change but my oil was a quart low. Any ideas what it might be?

96, these two threads should help you.

If it is indeed your rear main seal, try that product that is mentioned in the posts.
It helps to soften up the seal and make it swell, thus sealing again.

It does work as you will see proof in both posts.
May not work in all cases, but much cheaper if it does work than forking out a crap load of $$$ to replace the seal.

Also check the rear of your valve covers.
It could be dripping from there also and running down.

That is what happened on my '68 Chevelle many years ago.
We thought it was a rear main seal, and it turned out to be both valve covers instead.

My dad and I replaced both valve covers with the nice shiny alloy or chrome ones back then and with new gaskets, and problem solved.

oil leak

96-
I'm not sure but that sounds a lot like a rear main seal... it could be from the top and dripping down through the bell housing. I do not know how to check this problem other than, rule out other leak sources higher up. happy hunting..

Im gonna have my wrench take a look at it. If its the rear seal Im probably going to throw a new clutch in too.
