Well I'll be danged! Someone finally realized people don't like oil dripping all over when taking the oil filter off and struggling to actually get at it in the first place!

I think this is going to get pretty usual in these new designed engines for the next coming years.
I know the new 6.0L POWER STROKE DIESEL (FORD) did the same exact thing by putting the oil filter on top, as seen here.

Well, don't hold your breath on that filter thing until you see how it works. That thing is upside down and when you unscrew it all that oil in the filter is going to want to go somewhere. That little lip on the mount is cute. I wonder what it is for?? It just does not look like it is going to hold all the oil that is going to dump out of the filter.
I have seen a very simular lip on the Pontiac GP 3.1. The lip is to short to do what it was intended to do and guides all the spilled oil right into a part of the sub frame you can not wipe out and it will drip out of it for days. Most just take that lip off to stop that designed in problem.
Lets hope I am wrong. Maybe it has a drain tube connected to it that guides the spilled oil down the engine and dumps out near the pan drain so it all goes into the collection pan.

But the filter is upsidedown, so if you drained the fluid, wouldnt it be mostly out of the filter, and what's left could easily be handled by the cute lip...
I still want to relocate mine, but hear so many horror stories.. and was told to just leave it alone...
BTW.. ROB!!! =) or anyone who had one, can someone show me a pic of the magic wrench i need to buy for the filter removal... i heard it clenches the filter and may even bend it but it easily removes it... I just use one of those rubber strap wrenches.. that seems to loosen it enough to unscrew it with my hands...
whats this magic tool look like so I can go buy one..

Yeah, I heard from someone a while back that if you pop a hole in the filter, the rest of the oil will seep back instead of remaining in the filter.
It would be a pain w/ the 3rd gen V6's, but easy with this V6. Try it, 4th gens!

Now you could always avoid the anti-drainback valve altogether by getting a cheap Fram filter
...no thanks though, I will stay with OEM filters myself.
