oil consumption

Hi, I just changed my oil 1000 miles ago. Today I checked my oil level and it was down too the fill line. I double checked the the drain plug and it was not leaking at all. I also checked the oil filter that too was tight and not leaking. The truck doesn't leak at all. No spots in my driveway or anything. What could it be? I need some help fast!! Thanks a lot
Tyson

If you pull your oil dipstick and it looks like chocolate milk then you have coolant mixing with the oil. You will also see this in the coolant but not as noticable.Bad head gasket or a timming chain that has broken thru the water pump.

Also drop your skid plate and see if you have any oil on the bottom of the motor (front main seal leak), or you could just be burning it.

you cahnged your oil 1000 miles ago.. did you do it personally or have a shop do it? and do you know for a fact that it was full? most times, its not really that you lost it, but that it never was full to begin with

What engine do you have? On my old 3.0 I had the same concern. I asked the dealer and they said it was normal for the 3.0 to consume one quart every 1000-1200 miles. I confirmed this with Toyota USA. I have the 3.4 now, no problems.

My 22RE in my '89 would eat a quart ever 1,000 miles while driving on the highway. Motor had 260K miles on it, consumed oil, but still ran strong (strong is a relative term or course).

It is "normal" in that Toyota won't warrnty any less oil loss than that, it is "not normal", in that if you took a poll, most 3.0 owners probably do not lose near that much. It is a similar standard industry wide, I believe, basically a way to get out of expensive warranty problems.

The the thing that worries me the most is the fact that when I got the truck with 110,000 miles on it it only burned about 1 quart every 3,000-4,000 miles. Now it needs 1 quart after 1000 miles? There has got to be something wrong!

Yep thats the thing. I just had my mechanic look at it because it would idle very low like around 500 RPMs. It acted as if there was a fuel delivery problem. I cleaned my TB and that didn't work, so I took it to him and he found cylinder 3 had a clogged injector. He used so machine that hooks up to the fuel line, that mixes a strong detergent with gas and "eats" through the obstruction. After I got it back like a month later it started ding it again. I took it back and this time he found the MAF was dirty as hell so he cleaned it. He also checked the timing which he said was perfect, did a compression check which also was perfect, changed the plugs and wires, and did the cap and rotor! Now its running bad again. This time I think I will take it to the stealership or a "speciallty" Toyota shop to have them look at it.
