not on your poll but mine's mounted on the right rear quarter panel of my 92 4rnr using a ball mount. i really like the ones mounted in the rear middle of any rear tire carrier (wishing i had one).

From what I hear, the bumper isn't a very good place to mount the antennae. The roof is the best place with the hood second. At least that's the way I understood it. I was debating between the bumper and hood and decided on the hood. Somebody had a post about this not long ago and it was really helpful in me making my decision. I haven't got my antennae installed yet, but I will be getting a Firestick II. Suppose to be good.
I'll try to find that post about mounting. Well have fun. DH6twinotter

If you don't plan on getting an ARB type of bumper, I'd mount it on the hood like in my pic here when it use to be there.
I got a very low SWR match of around 1.3 or so. But now that I have the ARB, I prefer it there. The antenna is now gone in exchange for a black 4' Firestik II. The SWR match is even better on the ARB. I have about a 1.1 across all 40 channels. Center of the roof is best as mentioned, but may be inconvenient for some. Check out Jim's post here. He really likes his, and it comes off real easily for parking in his garage. The shop did a good job, and no leaks. That is the main thing for a roof install is to do it right the first time if you go that route.

Put mine on the hood. And it's detachable:
Off: On: Write-up here. Not my first choice for style of antenna, but it works well I guess.

This bracket was found at CB City locally. It's referred to as a "Z bracket". I sanded away the paint around the bolt under the hood which holds it down. It bends a little so you can make sure it clears the hood when you let it close. Lastly I used velvet/felt tape on either side of it to prevent it from making noise if it vibrates against the hood or fender. That way it won't scratch my paint either. I covered the inside of my ashtray with this felt stuff at the time I installed my CB too. 2 mods in one.

Corey (or anyone else with a FireStik II), I have the black 4 footer as well and picked up a general heavy duty spring. I put it on (bumper mounted) and played around with the antenna, but waaaay too much play. I wouldn't even think about driving around with it so I took it back.
What kind of action do you all get from your springs with these? Something that would allow little movement, yet enough give if you had branches or something overhead would be ideal. I like the lack of movement without a spring, but as brittle as these probably are, that isn't gonna fly on the trail. Perhaps the brand I picked up was worthless though too. Thanks |

Darren, my antenna barely moves when motoring down the highway.
But out on a trail, it moves all 4 directions depending on the terrain. I have had the same spring since February of '99 I think when I put it on the hood. It's a heavy duty one. But if you were to grab it and move it, there is hardly any play. Might have been the spring you had. |

I'm hoping for a no hole installation (though... its looking grimmer and grimmer... but i did run across this.... don't you think this could work on the top of the tailgate? I need to take a look at just how the hindges work, but maybe just maybe this trunk mount could work... iiiiiiidono, always thinking...
heres the mount, http://www.firestik.com/Catalog/K-74.htm |

I don't think your reception will be very good with that mount, but I'm just speculating. The mount on the fender/hood area would be a no hole installation, and my reception has been awesome. Just my 2 bits for ya. Good luck with the choice & install. ![]() Al

You could use the swivel mount from this web site:
http://www.1stopelectronics.com/shop...=82&cart=27939 I believe it is about 4 or 5 down. Called the Hood SS or something like that. You may be able to jarry-rig it to go in the crack between your tail light and tail gate. You could then rotate the swivel 90 degrees so as to have the antenna pointing the right direction. I dunno, just a thought. Well, have fun. ![]() DH6twinotter

hum.... thats a really good idea. I have yet to take apart the tail housing, that'l be a good thing to check out and know how to do later as i'm sure I'll be needing it later. I'll look into that. Al, the only thing about the front mount is that (personally) I really don't like the look of a piece of metal sticking out of the hood. I know its the most practical... and probably the best... i'm just stubborn like that. idono... i'll keep you guys posted what I end up doing. I think i'm going to try the tail light idea (if it looks plausable)

The one I was referring to was the 1st or 2nd one on that page, not the 4 or 5 like I mentioned earlier. I just went back and noticed that. Hope it didn't cause any confusion.
I'm thinking about getting the SS hood mount for my Runner. Do you all think that $21.99 is a good deal for the mounting bracket and coax? Well hope everything turns out ok. Have fun all, ![]() DH6twinotter

DH6 - I'm not sure about that item, but their prices on other stuff are really good. I checked all over, too. I personally like the tailgate slot mount idea. That's a hot place for mounting on the Jeep GC's as I've found through recent research. I still think I might drill the roof...

Ok. I think I may go ahead and order that. I got the CB from that place and the prices did seem to be pretty good. Just hopes it makes it here.
I saw a Jeep Wrangler today with a CB antenna mounted on the rear, right above the tail light. It had an awesome mount. The antenna was a black 4' fiberglass one. The mount looked like it had a plastic cover that snapped over the mount itself, the wires, and the screws. It was VERY clean and matched the antenna really well. Looked just like a factory install would. If I could find one of those, I may reconsider where I would mount my antenna. Well, have fun. DH6twinotter

HBoss--Your bracket looks a little more low profile than most. Do you happen to know the height measurement of that bracket?
Thanks. Have fun all. DH6twinotter

Austin,
All those who've mentioned roof, then hood, then bumper are absolutely right. Get reading on Firestik's website. More reading than you can shake a stick at. For me it was a decision between functionality and form. I originally had a hood channel mount w/ good SWR readings. I can't remember what but they were good. The thing I got sick of was that obnoxious hood channel mount sticking out of my hood. I flattened the hood channel mount (a portion of it anyways) and remounted it on the back of my bumper. I've yet to test it but i can already tell that reception and im sure transmission will be much less. However as long as I can communicate w/ the guys I'm riding with, that is enough for me. I really don't have a need to talk w/ truckers 10 miles away. http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.p...ight=bumper+cb Bob |
