OK guys here's one for you!!! It was a nice day yesterday so I was going over my truck, Checking the brakes, the tires....you know that type of stuff. Well I went to check the ball joints by grabbing the tires and trying to shake it up and down. Ball Joints were good. So I went to check the tie rods and shake it side to side and I had some play on the drivers side.

Thinking that I might have had a bad inner tierod, I slid the tierod boot down to take a look and the play is actually coming from inside the rack!!! The shaft that exits the rack was moving not the inner tie rod. I went to the passenger side to try the same thing and it was super tight with no play. So I guess the question is.....Is the rack going bad??? and does anyone know if there's an adjustment to tighten it up??? The tire is feathering on the inside where the rack has the slop.

Mikey, sorry dude, but unfortunatley I believe it is the rack. These things always have problems.
Again unfortunatley Toyota doesn't offer a reman unit, so you can pick one up at your local Toyota Dealer for just over $900.(Part # 44200-35013)This is an updated part number, supposedly fixing the problem.
Another option is going after market, but I don't know how the quality compares to Toyota.

Uh, well, sometimes I feel a little pop in a hard turn. you have prompted me to give it a check like you gave yours. It won't be until this saturday when I get to it though.

Well guess what? I had some play on the driver's side as well with the passenger side being tight. I never felt anything strange in the truck while driving but I took it to the dealer today and they are replacing the entire rack! I will get the truck back tomorrow. Luckily, I am still covered under warranty. It expires in 6 months. The dealer here (Stevinson Toyota) was very cool about it. The sevice guy covered it even though I just got SAWs and 285s put on. Kudos to this dealer. I will post pics of the new mods tomorrow.

This part # is the original part that is on your truck now. Part # 44200-35013 is an updated part that is supposed to fix the problem.

Negative sir. That is not the correct part #(44200-35013) for the rack that is a link assembly, meaning that it is the rack and inner tie rods. If it is just the rack then that is all he would need to replace and nothing else. If the inner tie rods are ok then he wouldn't need to replace those, could save himself another $60. Most dealerships will try to sell the whole thing but that doesn't mean it is what you need.

for 60 bucks I think I would rather buy the complete one and just pull out the old and slap in the new. although at 650 it's gonna be kindof tough. too bad Toyota doesn't have a discount for vehicles over 100k. didn't they used to?

Well I am not sure if they offered a discount for vehicles over 100K or not? As for the two parts the link assembly would run $699.53 with shipping and I would have to order it. The rack would run $650.58 with shipping and I have that one in stock. Guess it all depends on how deep those pockets are? Someone let me know if your are interested.

Heres a question for you- I'm looking at new tie-rods for my 98 4Runner SR5, and Schucks only listed an inner and outer for the drivers side and an outer for the passenger side. I honestly haven't had a chance to look underneath, but wouldn't there be an inner tie rod for the pass. side as well?

sorry to butt in but both the inners are the same so there is only one part number. maybe that's the confusion.
