Odd Grinding Noise

OKay, this one has been alluding me for awhile now... I get a realy horrific grinding noise that seems to be coming around the flywheel area, at both 2100 and 2900 RPM, sometimes 3100. It sounds like it's at those speeds too, as if a grinder is at work in the bell housing. No where in between or otherwise, just at those revs. I recently had an engine replaced, and had hoped they would find it and fix the problem.. but no luck, it's still there with the new one. As far as I can tell (this is on a 91 4runner btw..) there isn't any signs of grinding on the flywheel, nor in the tranny bell. My roommate had an 87 yota p/u that did the same exact thing, but at different revs so Im GUESSING that this is a common thing among some yotas... Any ideas guys? thanks.

Nope, it's not common on Toys. Never heard of it before. But I think whoever put your engine in had better drop your tranny and fix whatever bolts they left loose before you rev it up, your clutch/flywheel explodes and takes your leg with it.

It was happening before the new engine was put in. I said there was a new engine put in simply to state the fact that this noise was there BEFORE and AFTER the replacement. Im taking it in to have the tranny flusched later this week, I have a feeling that's where the cause of my problems are.. The lady who owned it before me started off with this truck w/o any experience on driving a stick, and that was quite awhile ago. Probably full of metal grindings from worn down gears, and with it occasionally popping out of gear, signs are starting to point in this direction. I'll keep my fingers crossed that a flush clears it up, last thing I need is to replace or rebuild a tranny, I still owe on the engine!
