O2 sensor disconnected should it trip a code always?

I disconnected my new and old 02 sensor and then drive it around 1/2 a day but it never trips a code, is this normal or should the computer trip a code, I would think a few hours of driving is more then plenty time to notice its not there. I have had a couple mechanics say the O2 sensor new and old seems to hang up on 9 something at idle, but they do not know what that points too? Thanks.
