The check engine light came on about 3 weeks ago. We had the code cleared once we knew it was the o2 sensor. about 5 days later it came back on so I reset everything by disconnecting the battery. Now it just came on about an hour ago while on the highway. Is it time for a new o2 sensor?

Specs:
2000 4runner SR5 2wd around 130,000 miles

Have you inspected the sensor for any wierd build-up? What about the wires/connection to it?

I have checked the wires and they seem to be fine. I haven't messed with the sensor because I haven't found a good write up on cleaning and inspecting it yet.

Probably not, I have been busy preparing for school. Plus I belive I'm in the right place to get advice on this problem I'm sure. I'm here to learn.

If you got an OBD code for an O2 sensor it was probably code P0136. Do a search on that and you'll get lots of info on that. To answer your question, more than likely yes, if you reset the code and it came back, you should replace it, but you better know what the code number was first.

i was told several times by dealer and autozone that my o2 sensor was bad... searched code here, dirty maf, so make sure you know what code it is, for me $3 cleaner vs CA emissions O2.... not $79

i had to replace my O2 at 130K so that might be it. its easy to replace it unless you have mud under your truck like i did so if you do just get some shop glasses

in my own very recent and rediculously frustrating experience i have found it to be a much better decision to pay the $30-50 and have a toyota dealership do the diagnostic and tell you EXACTLY what part (with part numbers!!!!) it is you need. then go searching for a better deal from suppliers that are very active in this forum. instead of going to autozone or any other little garage with a code reader and playing the guessing game like i did. my initial CEL left me with 4 codes!! anything from insufficient coolant temp to closed loop fuel system error. i thought i was being smart and saving money by figuring it out on my own. the truck hasnt been driven in 3 months and ive bought 2 sensors that werent the problem and arent returnable. oh ya, make sure you know if its cali-emissions or not!! means the difference between an $80 O2 sensor or a $150-230 air fuel ratio sensor (cali)!!
