Noisy drive belts anyone?

My drive belts are so loud. they dont squeel at all but they are just loud. I have tightened them up and lubed them with a bar of soap with no luck. Anyone else run into this issue? Anyone know of any drive belt brands that are better than Dayco?

You sure its your belts? I am trying to think of what in the world a belt could sound like other than squeel...

You sure your alternator isnt full of mud or lose a bearing?

Does it get louder when you hit the gas?

I have wondered if it could be within the timing cover but the techs replaced everything back there before. The harder I push on the gas the intake & exhaust kills the sound of that.

I have a 98 runner, and my belts are noisy and annoying. Belt dressing quiets them down for about a week. They are Toyota belts, probably still the originals. Although they look like they are in good shape, I am seriously thinking about replacing them.

What kind of noise do they make? The only kind of noise mine have ever made is a squeal or squawk...sounds like you may just be needing new belts, if so I'd go with stock Toyota belts.

It’s not a squeal or a squawk, just sort of a constant annoying whirring. You can really hear it once the car warms up, especially at traffic lights. It’s not a bearing because belt dressing quiets it down. Thanks for the advice, I probably will replace with OEMs.

My '90 SR5 did the same thing. It seemed that as the belt wore deeper into the pulleys, the more noise it made (almost a sort of rattle sound). Belt-Ease would quiet it down for a few days but after that it almost seemed worse. New belts solved it for me.

Some one mentioned to me a good idea on the belt problem, my Tundra's belt would squeak like crazy on cold starts and someone suggest next time it happens, I remove the belt, clean the pulls with brake cleaner and put it back on. Seems like a good enough idea, try it with your rig.

My 94 makes the same whirring sound, no squeaking. I've been considering replacing the belts but they really arent all that old. It sounds like an idling turbine at the stop lights.

I have the same problem with mine, it used to get very annoying. Now all I can hear is my exhaust.

I used Gatorback at the last belt change. For noise it took alot of trial and error. It was a matter of getting them in there just right (but now knowing exactly where that was). Now they are quiet as can be.

my truck has this issue where it sounds like the pullies bearings are going or something. i was cleaning my engine while the engine was running and i sprayed some water on the lower pullies, and the squealing sound went away for about 15 seconds, then it came back. spray it again, noise goes away momentarily. what would be the fix for this?

Try WD-40 on the belts. If they quiet down and then quickly make noise again they need to be tightened or replaced. As HondaTec said, properly tensioned new belts should be quiet and not make any noise.
