no more ECT what gives

Well yesterday it worked and today not so much. I noticed because it was shifting weird (normal) and the shifting wasn't so drawn out as I'm used to. So I checked under the hood and no fuse for ECT and I would look under the dash but my fuse locater diagram died long ago. Any ideas?

When it's on the tranny shifts at a higher rpm, for better acceleration. No problem leaving it on, though you may be getting worse gas mileage.

What Eric said....It does help when you are trying to merg into traffic or just have a faster and better take off from a dead stop. It keeps your truck from shifting so fast so it can wind out a little more.
No reason to really leave it on as you will use a little more gas when you do as the book telld you. Mike

Well on my last trip to the keys we did 70-80mph for 60 miles then 55 for 90+ miles and after I emptied the tank the mpg calculation was 18.5. I'm running stock gearing (4:10) and run 295,75,16's with 3"susp, lift 1" body, and aton of armor on the runner soooo every little bit helps. The ECT is handy when I'm driving and I average 16-17mpg. So I need to find the fuse I think. and on the internal fuse block I don't have the sticker anymore. If it's not there and I didn't see it on the engine mounted fuse block. I will be re-gearing to 4:56's soon but until then lets solve the mysterious disappearing ect feature.

i find whether the ECT is on or off, it all depends on throttle position.... like if i floor it with ECT on it shifts aroudn 5000RPM, same with it off, so for me, i just leave it off (better MPG).
And with ECT off it WILL hold the gear between shifts as long as you have your foot in it...

Aaron, I just checked my 01 Tacoma and nothing under the hood or in the dash fuse box and mine are still marked like new. It must be hooked in with something else on the same circuit.
I'm sure you have thought of this but have you checked your tranny fluid level lately? How about raidator...is it full and not running hotter than usual? Sorry I wasn't more help, Mike

Ok so I've read every ect post on here and a few not working but different years and wiring for certain. I tried jumping the hot wire to the one I thought to be the dash light to see if I could get it to go but nothing (lost my clock in the process). I checked and re checked the transmission plugs here and there. I any remember I had some issues with a front t-case seal so I touched practically everything. I know yotas aren't known for being finicky so I'm not sure what to do next. The dash light doesn't come on and ect does not work (obviously wouldn't care if it was just a light). I checked the OD and it works no pinched wires on the center console.

That is the Pattern Select Switch in the Toyota FSM.

The only diagnosis in the FSM is simply checking switch operation with a meter:

Disconnect electrical connector from pattern select switch.
Using ohmmeter, Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 2 and 3 with switch in PWR position on Tacoma and 4Runner. See Figs. 39 and 40. No continuity
should exist in NORM position. Replace switch as necessary.

I can't post the diagram, but there are only two pins in the four position connector, which would be 2 & 3.

Switch gets power from left kick panel 10A "Gauge Fuse". At switch, you should have 12V on Blk/Org wire when key is on

Switch Grn/Red wire goes to Junction Connector (J/C) 6 in center of dash. At JC6 you will have 3 grn/red wires, all connected, one goes to POWER indicator light, which has a Wht/Blk wire that goes to ground (Pin G202 in left kick panel)

The 3rd Grn/Red wire at JC6 goes to the engine ECM (pin 10) in right side of dash.

Ok so I'll try that though I do not have a blk/org wire I do have a blk/yellow wire, I'll double check the gauge fuse seeing as how I didn't know if a fuse existed that went to the switch.

Oops. Thought you had a 97. I have no idea how different your schematic would be from mine.

PS: Got my FSM on CDROM from EBAY for $19

PPS: are you getting continuity through the switch when it is on?
